Yokogawa launches advanced system to monitor subsea power cables for offshore wind farms

Yokogawa has unveiled its OpreX Subsea Power Cable Monitoring system, designed to enhance the reliability and efficiency of offshore wind power operations. This innovative solution leverages continuous temperature monitoring to detect damage in subsea power cables, enabling smarter, condition-based maintenance while reducing inspection costs.

Subsea cables, critical for transmitting electricity from offshore wind farms, face constant risks from natural forces and accidents. Damage to these cables can cause costly power disruptions, making regular maintenance essential. However, with cables stretching over vast distances along the seabed, traditional inspection methods using work vessels and divers are both labour-intensive and expensive.

Continuous cable temperature tracking

The OpreX Subsea Power Cable Monitoring system tackles this challenge head-on. By integrating Yokogawa’s advanced fibre-optic temperature sensors, the system continuously tracks cable temperatures and pinpoints anomalies in real time. This enables operators to perform maintenance precisely when needed – maximizing efficiency, reducing costs and extending asset lifespan. Designed for both new and existing offshore wind farms, the solution ensures seamless integration into operations.

The system can be combined with Yokogawa’s OpreX Collaborative Information Server, providing centralized data management and video monitoring. This unified platform empowers operators to monitor conditions, analyse data and respond quickly, ensuring smooth and reliable energy transmission.

With decades of expertise in the wind energy sector, Yokogawa delivers end-to-end support – from system design and implementation to long-term maintenance. By adopting a ‘system of systems’ approach, which connects and optimizes independently managed systems, Yokogawa drives secure, sustainable operations for offshore wind power. The Japanese company is widely recognized for harnessing digital innovation to support customers in optimizing production, assets and supply chains, paving the way for autonomous operations and a sustainable energy future.
