EvoLogics Ships Sonobot 5 with USBL and Expands in Berlin

Introducing: Sonobot 5 with Integrated USBL

In April, EvoLogics introduced a new capability for its Sonobot 5 uncrewed surface vehicle - the configuration with an integrated USBL (Ultra-Short Baseline) antenna to support underwater operations. This enhancement enables the Sonobot to serve as a mobile surface node for acoustic USBL positioning, providing real-time location data of underwater vehicles like EvoLogics' Quadroin AUV, as well as diver teams using the EvoLogics Diver Navigation System.

Overcoming the limits of traditional USBL systems

Traditionally, USBL systems are deployed from static buoys or vessels, limiting their range and flexibility. This restricts the operational area of underwater assets that rely on them for real-time navigation.

🔹 EvoLogics' solution:
A retractable mechanical arm for the Sonobot 5, designed to:

  • Lower the USBL into the water during missions
  • Safely retract above the floats when idle
  • Provide optimal depth for accurate acoustic tracking
  • Simplify transport and deployment

🔹 Engineering details:
The arm is made of a stiff, waterproof carbon composite tube with:

  • Internally routed cables
  • A custom-shaped, drag-reducing USBL head
  • A hydrodynamic design that preserves Sonobot performance
