Hydrone-RCV and Sontek M9 ADCP for Surveying a Glacier

Seafloor Systems is collaborating with SonTek/Xylem for integration of the HyDrone-RCV with a SonTek M9 ADCP (acoustic Doppler current profiler). Two integrated HyDrone catamaran platform systems were shipped last week to IMAX videographer Sean Casey, who will return to Alaska for a month-long filming of Dawes glacier. The HyDrone-RCV system which was released in June 2014, is a remotely controlled multi-purpose vessel that was designed to survey in uncertain environmental conditions and may be specified to individual customer requirements. The unit may be purchased with the desired depth sounder pre-installed, as an integrated total solution, or supplied ready to accept... (read more)

China’s Western Pacific Ocean System Project to Use TRDI ADCPs

The Chinese Academy of Science’s Institute of Oceanology in Qingdao has selected Teledyne RCI to provide its Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) in support of the Western Pacific Ocean System project. WPOS is a five-year research project commencing in April 2014. The project includes the deployment of five research vessels, a remotely operated submersible and an array of sub-surface moorings off the east of the Philippines and Indonesia. These resources will be utilised to examine the deep ocean and its connection to climate change and coastal environments. Six arrays, comprised of a total of 29 moorings, will be central to... Fugro GEOS Rises to Thunder Horse Challenge

Fugro GEOS Inc will provide real-time full water column current measurements for BP's Gulf of Mexico Thunder Horse PDQ, the largest production drilling quarters semi-submersible in the world. Fugro Geos chalked up ample "firsts" in their determination to meet the challenge. The contract, which has seen the system successfully operating for nearly one year, involved an extensively detailed system design, calculation, testing and the building of the first self-contained 38kHz ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler). The design included the repackaging of all the electronics into a subsea housing, and the installation of a ruggedized cable to the surface for power... (read more)

Ice Studies in Alaska's Cook Inlet for an LNG Terminal

ASL Environmental Sciences, Canada, has secured a contract for a 3-year metocean-ice study programme in Cook Inlet, Alaska for the proposed Alaska LNG Project terminal site. This turnkey metocean programme includes programme management, a protected species observer (PSO) vessel, HSE lead, data processing and analysis, and engineering input. During the summer and autumn of 2014, ASL deployed 3 Ice Profiler/ADCP moorings close to Nikiski, Alaska, on the Kenai Peninsula. Each mooring consisted of an Ice Profiler, ADCP, CT, and OBS Turbidity and was mounted in ASL’s own designed bottom frame or a taut-line mooring. An additional 8 ADCP moorings have... (read more)

Acoustic Modems for Multiple Access to ADCPs

EvoLogics S2C underwater acoustic modems are providing data transfers from multiple asynchronously operating ADCP's using a single pair of modems, deployed in the West Pacific for the Northwestern Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Experiment. In January 2011, an Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) research vessel "Kexue 1" ("Science One") returned from a 52-day-cruise in the West Pacific. The IOCAS team, among other tasks, has completed installing a mooring system that carries oceanographic instruments of the Northwest Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Experiment (NPOCE). Initiated by IOCAS, the NPOCE is an international cooperative program, aimed at studying the... (read more)
