86 ADCPs for Ocean Observatory Initiative

Teledyne RD Instruments (TRDI) has been awarded a contract from the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, with funding from the National Science Foundation, to provide up to 86 Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) Instruments as a component of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The OOI, a project funded by the NSF, is planned as a networked infrastructure of science-driven sensor systems to measure the physical, chemical, geological and biological variables in the ocean and seafloor. As a fully integrated system, OOI will collect and disseminate data on coastal, regional and global scales. Through a unique cyber infrastructure, OOI enables anyone with... (read more)

The Latest on Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers

Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) are sonar systems that measure water current velocities. The Doppler effect allows the sensors to measure the velocities over a range of depths, making them ideal for measuring currents in oceanographic applications. Geo-matching.com, the product comparison platform where hydrographic and geospatial professionals can find and compare products and manufacturers, provides an overview of the ADCPs available on the market. You can also access detailed product specifications that help you decide which solution best suits your needs. Operating underwater, the method works like hand-held radars used by police to catch speeding motorists. A sound burst is emitted... (read more)

RD Instruments ‘ADCPs in Action’ Users Conference Returns to San Diego in 2005

After hosting a conference in Europe in 2004, RD Instruments’ popular ADCPs in Action Users Conference will once again return to San Diego, California on 4-6 April, 2005. For those unfamiliar with this event, ADCPs in Action is a forum devised by RDI several years ago to bring the oceanographic community together for a lively exchange of information between Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) users, industry experts, and third party manufacturers. This users conference continues to attract industry experts from around the globe to share their experience and address the topics deemed most important to... (read more)

ADCPs in Action in the Netherlands

Aqua Vision, Teledyne RD Instruments’ representative in the Netherlands, has been hosting local ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) Workshops where users were able to share information, attend training and learn about Aqua Vision and Teledyne RDI’s latest product and software advancements. This year’s biennial event took place from 11 to 12 June 2014 at Hotel Mitland. The event attracted 80 attendees from 17 countries, spanning 5 continents. What began as a meeting in 1994 to train the Dutch Ministry for Transport and Public Works and the Belgian Ministry of the Flemish Community on newly introduced ADCP technology, has since evolved... Ice Profiler at LNG Terminal Site

The port of Gros Cacouna on the St Lawrence River downstream of Quebec City is the proposed site of an LNG offloading terminal. Trow Engineering, on behalf of TransCanada and Petro-Canada, hired ASL to collect and process current, wave and ice data at the proposed terminal location. From October through November 2004 an ADCP was moored on site and provided high quality current and wave data. The current data were supplemented by drogued drifter tracks collected by ASL’s project partner, Procean Environment Inc. In November an ASL Ice Profiler was added to the mooring to collect ice draft data over... (read more)

RDI Awarded Dual-Frequency Patent

RD Instrument (RDI) was recently awarded a patent for a dual frequency ADCP, or Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler. Currently under development, RDI’s dual-frequency ADCP will permit detailed river and stream surveys of water depths from 1-150 feet by means of a single instrument. The lower frequency provides long-range profiling capability and improved bottom tracking at all depths, even under high sediment and moving bottom sediment conditions. The higher frequency provides the spatial-resolution required for accurate profiling of shallow gauging sites and boundary flows. Based upon RDI’s patented 2-D Phased Array transducer, the new dual-frequency ADCP is smaller and lighter and... (read more)

ADAM Operational in the Gulf of Mexico

Shell's new water current data acquisition and display system is now operational in the Gulf of Mexico. The ADCP Data Acquisition Manager (ADAM), designed and built by Fugro GEOS, allows users to have real-time access over the Internet to data from Shell's RDI ADCPs (acoustic Doppler current profilers) deployed in the Gulf and, eventually, anywhere in the world. Shell has a large number of platform-based ADCP systems in the Gulf of Mexico but, until now, integration and storage of collected data was a manual process. ADAM automates this process and centralizes the ADCP data into an SQL database. In addition,... (read more)
