Sanyal Sunil

Sanyal Sunil (1977) joined the Indian Navy and specialized in hydrographic surveying. He gained his sea legs in the Indian Navy’s Hydrographic Department, nurtured his interest in geography, and graduated. He has a postgraduate degree in GIS and Remote Sensing. He has worked in the field of hydrographic surveying since 1996 and witnessed the shift in perspective from the analogue era to present-day digital technology. He ventured into commercial hydrographic surveys after retiring from the navy in 2011 and founded Team SURge with three other navy colleagues. (read more)

Mark Jonas

Mark Jonas has over 20 years commercial experience in the industry. He has a unique blend of experience in oceanographic surveying, environmental data processing and long-term data management and archive. This includes the development of computer hardware and software tools and incorporation of the data in a variety of CAD, Spatial Databases and GIS Systems. When those systems can’t solve the problem, he does a bit of programming! Fugro And Colombian Maritime Authority Complete Seep Hunting Study

Fugro and the Colombian Maritime Authority (Dirección General Maritima, DIMAR) have completed a joint environmental seep hunting study to help assess the country’s resource potential in the Caribbean Sea. The study involved shallow water seabed sediment coring, geochemical analyses, and seabed heat flow measurements. How to Derive Shallow-water Bathymetry Measurements from Satellites

TCarta Marine, a provider of marine geospatial products, is commercializing a new technique to derive highly accurate shallow-water bathymetry measurements from NASA’s ICESat-2 satellite data. The new methodology is being developed with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Volcano F is the Origin of the Floating Stones, Researchers Discovered

Since August, a large accumulation of pumice has been drifting in the Southwest Pacific towards Australia. Researchers at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany), together with colleagues from Canada and Australia, have now identified the origin of this pumice raft. It is a so-far nameless underwater volcano in Tongan waters. The study has been published online in the International Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research. Navigate Hydrographic – the Nautical SmartChart

What is the core role of a hydrographer? To map the seafloor? Provide a precise position on the water? Some may believe it is to play with lots of expensive toys on boats, while colleagues are stuck in the office. While all those answers may be correct, I am asking about the core role of a hydrographer. I would suggest that it is collecting data to provide information that companies, clients and consultants rely on to make educated and accurate decisions. This is where our value as a professional service is demonstrated. However, here is another question - how do we present that information and, more to the point, could it be better? What is the core role of a hydrographer? To map the seafloor? Provide a precise position on the water?
