It’s an immense task as the USA has about 95,000 miles of coastline, important ports and a wide range of users – from recreational boaters to the biggest container vessels and tankers. The country also has to deal with environmental disasters like hurricanes and oil spills. NOAA is undergoing changes as the chart portfolio is ‘going digital’ and new initiatives such as using Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS) for surveys. This article describes the installation of a hardware and software system for bathymetric surveys in the maritime part of the Congo River. The ‘Regie des Voies Maritimes’ (RVM) is a Congolese public administration in charge of an operational navigation river lane in the Congo maritime reach. From the quality perspective, an electronic navigational chart (ENC) as a product is more demanding than its paper predecessor. Quality control and quality assurance of an ENC is a complex matter. The task of ensuring ENC quality during practical chart production is much broader than the direct implementation of standards. The biggest worldwide geodatabase, made by the crowd
Nautical charts are expensive, and in many countries data are not always up to date. OpenSeaMap is an alternative solution which is free for anybody to use worldwide. Following the example of Wikipedia, the data are collected by volunteers and are visible on the chart within just a few minutes. In the night of 14 April 1912, the unthinkable happened. The mightiest ship afloat, the brand new White Star Line ship Titanic, was on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. The ship was advertised as unsinkable. And, if unsinkable, why should there be adequate life boats for all the passengers and crew? The ship departed from Southampton on 10 April. Seabed Characterisation Using Wind Noise

The acoustic reflection coefficient of the seabed can be measured from the wind-generated noise of the ocean using a vertical line array of hydrophones suspended in mid-water. Results of experiments at several sites have previously been published and an example is presented here. The effect of the seabed on acoustic propagation from a source to receptor is illustrated by means of a simple formula.<P> The formula predicts thatfor a highly reflective seabed the received acoustic power at moderate ranges could be at least four times that received from a single direct path, and higher still at long ranges. Decimetre-level Positioning System for Hydrographic Applications

Fugro has introduced a new service called Fugro High Performance (HP) with design goal of 0.2m 95 per cent horizontal and 0.3m 95 per cent vertical. Both monitoring data and field results are presented showing a performance well within these criteria. This new high accuracy service has expanded the applications for real-time DGNSS in both static and mobile environments.
