The Study of Mapping the Seafloor

What is the Difference Between a Bathymetry Chart and a Hydrographic Chart?
This article will immerse you into the deep water of Bathymetry. It explains in detail what a bathymetry map is, what it shows, what methods we use to collect the bathymetry data and last but not least, how to create a good quality bathymetry map. It will also cover the difference between a bathymetry chart and a hydrographic chart and the techniques our ancestors used in the past to collect and record depths. What is Bathymetry? Bathymetry is the study of mapping the seafloor. Bathymetric maps represent the ocean (sea) depth as a function of geographical coordinates, just as topographic maps... (read more)

Hydrographic Survey Charting Using GIS

PD Ports is streamlining the way it shares hydrographic data by using GIS software from British software developer, Cadcorp, at Teesport. Handling around 40 million tons of cargo per annum, Teesport is a major deep-water complex and one of the largest container ports in the north of England. The first priority is to ensure the safe movement of the considerable amount of river traffic handling that cargo. Teesport relies a lot on hydrographic survey charts which provide an up-to-date record of the depth of the river in berths, approaches and channels. Captain Jerry Drewitt, Harbour Master for Teesport and Hartlepool,... (read more)

Coastal Region High- resolution Seabed Mapping and Geophysical Survey

Osiris Projects
Osiris Projects are market leaders in coastal shallow water high-resolution seabed mapping and geophysical survey. Established in 1997, Osiris Projects remains independent and able to react to the changing demands within this niche sector of the UK and Northern Europe marine survey market, ranging from inland waterways to full scale multi-parameter seabed mapping projects covering many hundreds of square kilometres of coastal seabed. Osiris Projects are anticipating the delivery of their specialised new survey vessel: Bibby Tethra.   Osiris Projects are still located on the Wirral, northwest England, and have steadily grown and now operate from purpose-built facilities, employing nearly... High Precision Positioning

Extension of the Condamine Port in Monaco
The port of Monaco is undergoing an extensive construction process that will help double the port's capacity and protect it from heavy eastern swells and dangerous Mediterranean storms. The new port will include two unusual pontoon-type breakwaters as well as an additional hectare of land reclaimed from the sea. The project, costing more than 243 million euro, was initiated in June 1999 and is today slightly ahead of schedule. The existing port was built at the beginning of the century. At that time the water was too deep to allow, using building techniques of the day, construction of a jetty... (read more)

The Seabed Survey Data Model

An Industry Data Model for Managing Seabed Survey Data
Exploration and Production (E&P) companies spend millions of dollars every year undertaking seabed surveys to acquire data to help in many exploration and production activities such as: determining potential well locations, identifying geophysical hazards (geohazards), the selection of potential pipeline routes and offshore facility locations, and asset maintenance. E&P companies utilise hydrographic survey companies to collect, process and deliver seabed survey data to improve project planning and manage risk. However, to extract the true value from the acquired data there is a need to ensure consistency in how the data is structured and delivered so that it is more efficiently... (read more)
