Centralised Data for Hamburg Port Authority

From Ping to Chart
The Port of Hamburg is the third-largest container port in Europe and among the biggest in the world. There are almost 300 berths with a total of 43 kilometres of quay servicing around 9,000 ships per year. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) is responsible for the management of the harbour and has its own hydrographic survey department. This department collects its own multibeam and laser data which is augmented with additional data collected by the land survey department of the HPA and with data from external organisations. All bathymetric data is stored in a central Bathymetric Database (BDB) and from there disseminated... (read more)

Linear Optimisation Technology to Compress Spatial Data Files

Safe Software announced a joint agreement with Oregon-based TCI Software. The agreement will see TCI's Curvefitter linear optimisation technology integrated into the upcoming release of FME 2007, providing users with the capability to create smooth linework from "point to point" linework while reducing file size by up to 80 percent. File size reductions of this magnitude will result in much faster processing times for CAD and GIS data, and fewer processing problems caused by limited available memory.   Curvefitter technology also allows FME users to create more visually appealing maps. Guided by a fuzzy logic processor, Curvefitter replaces a series... (read more)

HarbourMan Trials

Ilex Computing is currently concluding trials of its new HarbourMan survey software with Kings Lynn Port & Conservancy Trust. The software runs on a laptop computer, which is easily transported between pilot cutter, tug and office. It simplifies and automates routine harbour bathy-survey obligations by providing a low-cost PC-based package for the acquisition, processing and contouring of bathy data. Acquisition to report time is reduced by providing a graphical editor and automating many tasks such as sounding selection. Navigation backgrounds may be scanned images, such as charts/maps, hand drawn diagrams, aerial photos or graphic images, which are then geo-referenced. Final... (read more)
