Ashtead Technology Partners with Oceanscience Group

Ashtead Technology – Offshore Division, UK, has entered into an exclusive agreement with The Oceanscience Group to offer the UnderwayCTD and UnderwaySV systems for the rental market. For the first time, the profiler is available for short or long-term hire with systems supplied out of Ashtead Technology’s three regional bases: Houston (USA), Aberdeen (UK) and Singapore. This agreement is exclusive within the oil and gas industry.   The UnderwayCTD/SV is a free-fall profiling system that offers research quality conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) or sound velocity (SV) profiles from a vessel moving at up to 14kts. Profiles over 1000m are achievable... (read more)

Icebreaker Collects Opportunistic Data Underway

While on passage from the Canadian west coast to the arctic, Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) scientists from the Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS) in Sidney, British Columbia were able to collect dozens of high-quality 400m CTD profiles across the Pacific Ocean without stopping or slowing the icebreaker CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier.     The researchers are among the latest groups to use the Oceanscience UnderwayCTD system for this type of profiling challenge. Each year, scientists from IOS travel to the arctic on board the Laurier and are able to conduct science while in transit. However, slowing or stopping... (read more)

Navy Contract for Ocean Sensors

Falmouth Scientific, Inc. (FSI) has received an US$3.6 million, multi-year contract for supply of conductivity, temperature, depth (CTD) sensors from the U.S. Navy’s Naval Underwater Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport (RI, USA). The DT-705 sensors are installed on submarines to monitor the surrounding environment. Ocean conductivity, temperature, and depth measurements provided by the sensor are also used to calculate sound velocity, salinity, and density for use in weapons targeting and submarine buoyancy determination. FSI has supplied over 150 DT-705 CTD sensors to the Navy under previous contracts. Sensors supplied under the new contract will be used to instrument Los Angeles... (read more)

Valeport Supports Biodiversity Research on Seamounts

Valeport is supporting scientists with research to expand knowledge of marine biodiversity with its fastCTD, which records the conductivity, temperature and depth of sea water. The fastCTD is integral to the research kit that will accompany respected marine biologist Dr Sonia Rowley as she undertakes her expedition to the island of Pohnpei, in the western Pacific Ocean, from 2 August until 13 September 2017. The trip follows in the wake of successful explorations at Pohnpei, the Cook and McCall seamounts, and Lōʻihi volcano in 2016. Data recorded by Valeport’s CTD profiler contributes to the research team’s understanding of biological processes,... (read more)

YSI Castaway Demonstrations

OSIL, UK, are offering demonstrations of the YSI CastAway, a profiler that gives oceanographers, hydrologists, and surveyors the ability to instantaneously view profiles of temperature, salinity, and sound speed from any dock, bridge, or boat. With three taps of a magnetic stylus pen, simply drop the CastAway CTD in the water, pull it up, and have conductivity, temperature, depth and sound velocity measured in minutes. An embedded LCD screen provides easy access for setup, deployment, and immediate data review. Integrated GPS virtually eliminates the need for field notes. The beginning and end of every cast is logged to the internal... (read more)

ROV-triggered Water Sampling System

OSIL have supplied a water sampling system of for use in the offshore oil industry. Iindustry-standard Niskin bottles are included due to their robustness. OSIL designed a sampling system to secure 6 primed 5L Niskin bottles, with space for an AML Oceanographic CTD Plus V2 in the centre of a stainless steel frame, which could then be mounted to the ROV.   The system was required to retrieve multiple samples, with space for a CTD probe (or similar instrument to collect background data), and had to be fitted to and operated by ROV under difficult conditions. The samples were to... (read more)
