High-resolution DEM Released for French Waters

SHOM has recently produced nested multi-purpose digital elevation models (DEMs). The resolution ranges from down to 10 metres for topo-bathymetric coastal DEMs to 100 metres for regional bathymetric DEMs in the North East Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. The DEMs benefited from a large amount of contributing data originating essentially from SHOM's database, local authorities, the UKHO Inspire data portal, crowdsourced data and the EU-funded EMODNET global models. These digital elevation models are available on SHOM's data portal: data.shom.fr.   (read more)

WorldDEM Now Entirely Edited and Available via Streaming

Airbus Defence and Space has announced that the entire edited WorldDEM database, together with the already available WorldDEM4Ortho dataset, is now available via streaming. This online access to the WorldDEM and WorldDEM4Ortho of the entire Earth’s landmass facilitates a wide range of applications such as line-of-sight analysis, hydrological modelling, satellite imagery orthorectification and much more. Following the comprehensive global acquisition campaign and subsequent processing effort, WorldDEM data is now available for the entire world in an edited version. This dataset corresponds to a hydro-enforced Digital Surface Model with water surfaces of lakes and reservoirs set to a single elevation, rivers and... (read more)

Seabed Digital Elevation Model to Accompany Datasets

Independent marine data management and publishing specialist OceanWise Ltd (UK) has established off-the-shelf marine mapping datasets including Raster Charts and the vector dataset Marine Themes. To accompany the datasets, OceanWise has created Marine Themes DEM, a seabed digital elevation model (DEM) at 1 and 6 arc seconds utilising single and multi-beam hydrographic survey data from the UK Hydrographic Office and other agencies. Offering exceptional value, OceanWise mapping and data management products are being used widely across central and local Government, NGOs and the commercial sector. To accompany the above datasets, OceanWise has created Marine Themes DEM, a seabed digital elevation... (read more)

Coastal Risk Assessment

Generation of Bathymetric Digital Elevation Models Along French Coasts
SHOM contributes routinely to the preparedness against coastal risks along French coastlines. For this purpose, regional to coastal digital elevation models are built for implementation in forecast systems against rapid flooding. By integrating users’ needs and its expertise relative to bathymetric data, SHOM offers new fit-for-purpose products along the French coastline. Bathymetric data are mainly used for producing nautical charts. However, a wide community of users requires continuous bathymetric surfaces. SHOM has recently started building nested digital elevation models across the French Waters (including overseas territories) for the purpose of hydrodynamic modelling. These are also used for other purposes such... (read more)

Septentrio GNSS Technology Guarantees DEME's Operations in Areas of Interference

The Belgian dredging, environmental and engineering group DEME is using Septentrio’s AsteRx GNSS receivers to obtain centimetre-level accuracy for all their dredging and marine construction operations worldwide. These receivers are designed to operate in difficult conditions: from ice-covered Arctic ports to the tropical climates of Southeast Asia; whether dredging a few metres from the coast line to constructing wind turbines kilometres out at sea. DEME began using Septentrio’s solutions over 10 years ago. While dredging in the Belgian town of Oostende, they were unable to obtain a reliable RTK position from their GNSS equipment because of interfering radio signals from... (read more)

Contracts in India and the Maldives for DEME

DEME, Belgium, has secured contracts for dredging and land reclamation works in India and the Maldives. The total value of these orders represent approximately EUR100 million. In India DEME has been awarded several new projects, including dredging works for Project Seabird Phase II submitted in a joint venture with L&T. It is one of the largest naval infrastructure projects in India, located at Karwar on the west coast of the country. Amongst the other projects, DEME will also execute the maintenance dredging works on the approach channel to Karwar Port for the ‘Directorate of Ports’ of Karnataka. DEME also returns... (read more)

EMODNet Hydrography Commences in Portugal

The latest phase of the hydrography part of the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODNet) has commenced with a meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, hosted by the Portuguese Marine and Atmospheric Institute (IPMA). As well as IPMA, the project involves leading hydrographic offices and marine institutes, agencies and private companies across Europe. OceanWise is heading up the UK effort, with the National Oceanographic Centre (NOC) acting as regional centre for Northwest Europe. The project is being led by Maris, The Netherlands. Survey metadata, data and the DEM are all publicly accessible through discovery, view and download services from an easy... (read more)
