Deep-sea Submarine

Visitors to the Monaco Yacht Show can explore the C-Explorer deep-sea submarine from 22nd to 25th September 2010. The submersible was designed for a maximum depth of 1,000 metres and comes equipped with modern lithium-ion batteries which allow it to remain submerged for up to twelve hours at a time. The submersibles are not only used for private purposes, but are also suited for oceanographic research and underwater photography. Deep-Sea Vents Discovery

Scientists aboard the Royal Research Ship James Cook have discovered a new set of deep-sea volcanic vents in the chilly waters of the Southern Ocean. The discovery is the fourth made by the research team in three years, which suggests that deep-sea vents may be more common in our oceans than previously thought.   Using an underwater camera system, the researchers saw slender mineral spires three metres tall, with shimmering hot water gushing from their peaks, and gossamer-like white mats of bacteria coating their sides. Monitoring Deep-Sea Industry

Writing in the scientific journal Nature, scientists have called for increased discussion of independent monitoring of deep-sea hydrocarbon industry activity with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of its ecological impact. The hydrocarbon industry is increasingly searching for hydrocarbon resources at much greater depths and developing drilling technology to exploit them. Deep-sea Soundings from Boats

An Early Technology
During the pioneering years of deep-sea sounding it became apparent that sounding from a sailing vessel often gave improbable results because of the drift of the vessel and the inability to maintain a perpendicular sounding line. In early 1840, Sir James Clark Ross overcame this problem by mounting a sounding reel on a ship’s boat. During sounding operations, this boat was held directly over a vertical sounding line while held in place by two other small boats acting as oar-propelled thrusters. Pioneering Deep-Sea Robot Lost

A pioneering deep-sea exploration robot, one of the first successful submersible vehicles that was both unmanned and untethered to surface ships, was lost at sea Friday 5th March on a research expedition off the coast of Chile. The fifteen-year old Autonomous Benthic Explorer, affectionately nicknamed ABE, was launched late Thursday night and had reached the seafloor to begin its 222nd research dive when, in the early hours of Friday morning, all contact with the surface vessel abruptly ceased. From Deep Sea to Deep Space during NASA Demonstrations

Sonardyne International Ltd., UK, has successfully demonstrated its wireless integrity monitoring technologies during a series of in-water demonstrations held at NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab (NBL) in Houston, Texas, USA. OneSubsea, USA, hosted the two-day technical symposium in November 2015 where senior oil company executives, chief engineers, equipment specifiers and offshore operators could witness the capabilities of Sonardyne’s and other vendors’ subsea innovations. The event was followed by two days of demonstrations organised by underwater vehicle manufacturer, Saab Seaeye, with Sonardyne as its primary technology partner. Kongsberg Cameras in Chinese Deep-sea Exploration

Kongsberg Maritime’s OE14-502 high-definition cameras raised the bar for deep-sea exploration during an expedition of China’s manned deep-sea submersible Jiaolong to the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean this June. The Jiaolong has been equipped with two ultra-deep-water versions of Kongsberg Maritime OE14-502D high-definition cameras along with an ultra-deep OE14-208 digital stills camera and two OE14-364 compact fixed colour cameras. WHOI Deep-Sea Hybrid Vehicle Nereus

Nereus, a mythical god with a fish tail and a man’s torso, was chosen as the name of a new deep-sea vehicle under construction at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The vehicle will be able to work in the deepest parts of the ocean, from 6,500 metres to 11,000 metres, a depth currently unreachable for routine ocean research.
