Papers CEDA Dredging Days 2009

CEDA Dredging Days 2009 has issued a call for papers. Next year's conference and exhibition will be held in the Conference Centre, Ahoy Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from 5-6 November 2009, under the theme ‘Dredging tools for the future'.   Many technological innovations have been introduced since 2003, when CEDA Dredging Days was dedicated to dredging tools and technology. Today the industry faces new challenges and new opportunities.  Rising energy costs, climate change, increasing demands for dredging services in new regions, the emergence of new markets, plant shortages and the need for sustainable dredging solutions, are just a few examples from... Cost Standards for Dredging Equipment

The CIRIA Guide to Cost Standards for Dredging Equipment 2009 offers a standard method to establish the capital and related costs of a wide range of dredging equipment. It provides a description of the most common dredgers and dredging equipment used, as well as the principles and definitions for the standards and cost standard tables.     These tables represent calculations on replacement values, depreciation and interest costs as well as maintenance and repair costs for the various types of equipment. The guide is based on the experience and statistics from international dredging contractors who are member of the International... (read more)

CEDA Introduces Dredging Management Commission

The Central Dredging Association (CEDA) has added a new commission to its ranks: the Dredging Management Commission (DMC). This commission has been set up to play a role in initiating and facilitating discussions, innovations and questions from the dredging community on the management of dredging works in the broadest sense. Its aim is to bring together all stakeholders related to dredging management works, and be the discussion platform, the focal point of contact and the initiator of knowledge development and by doing that lead to mutually beneficial improvements and solutions for all involved. The Dredging Management Commission had its inaugural... (read more)

Emu Survey for Thames Dredging

Emu Ltd, UK, has completed a study in the Thames Estuary to provide comparative data for a dredging programme. The Port of London Authority commissioned Emu to monitor background dissolved oxygen (DO2) and suspended sediment levels in support of a maintenance dredging project in the Princes Channel on the southern side of the Estuary. The Emu-gathered data will be compared with data gathered during dredging to determine the effect of dredging activity on the marine environment. The data was obtained from a custom-designed seabed-mounted frame with sensors positioned one metre above the seabed. (read more)

TerraStar Positioning for Dredging Operations

DEME, Belgium, has commissioned TerraStar GNSS’s TerraStar-D Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service to support the worldwide near-shore operations of its multifunctional fleet of dredgers and auxiliary vessels. Operating in conjunction with Septentrio AsteRx2eL GNSS positioning and AsteRx2eH heading receivers, the TerraStar-D service will provide DEME’s vessel fleet with seamless high-precision decimetre-level accuracies using a combination of GPS and Glonass satellites to ensure faster levels of convergence and high update rates in the most demanding environments. Selection of the specialist service follows extensive trials under the auspices of DEME’s Survey Department during which recurring real-time accuracies were also shown to be... (read more)

Echoscope Sonar for Dredging International

Unique Maritime Group of UAE has recently delivered two Echoscope 3D sonar to DI-MEDCO, a joint venture between Dredging International and Middle East Dredging Company, for the planned shore protection and harbour construction works of two artificial islands. The Echoscope, produced by CodaOctopus Products, is a sonar capable of producing real-time 3D imagery, enabling the operators of visualise underwater activity in 3D even in zero-visibility conditions. This latest delivery adds to Dredging International’s existing pool of Echoscope systems, further enabling the company to increase the efficiency of its operations. (read more)

Workshop Dredging Techniques and Environment

In connection with the MTEC 2011 in Singapore from 13th to 15th April 2011, a one-day pre-conference workshop is to take place on Tuesday 12th April 2011. Environmental aspects of dredging and dredging techniques will be presented by Frans Uelman for IADC.   The course is based upon the IADC-CEDA publication, Environmental Aspects of Dredging, published in 2008. The book was created by integrating and updating the stand-alone guides published between 1996 and 2001. This new work is completely revised and the material in the book and the course reflects recent advances in environmental dredging techniques. The price of this... (read more)

CEDA African Section Dredging Days

The African Section of the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) will organise its second international Dredging Days, in Tangiers, Morocco on the theme "Protection of the Coastline, Dredging and Sustainable Development" from 1 to 3 November 2006. Today, dredging interests extend to all facets of intervention works on the seabed, either for the restructuring or maintenance of facilities, aggregate extraction, submarine structures, beach nourishment and the protection of eroded areas. Smart dredging has become a crucial tool for economic and sustainable development. In 2006 the Dredging Days provide an opportunity for contact and exchange of knowledge and expertise for Euro-Africans and... (read more)

Environmental Training Course for Dredging

A training course on Environmental Aspects of Dredging is to be held in Delft, The Netherlands, in the spring of this year. Organised by the Postgraduate Academic Programme (PAO) of the Delft University of Technology, it will take place on 19th and 20th April 2012. The Training Course is based on the book Environmental Aspects of Dredging that was produced as a joint effort by the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) and the International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) and published by Taylor and Francis in 2008. The lessons are enhanced by the up-to-date knowledge of the course leaders who are... (read more)

Data Fusion for Inland Dredging

Present-day hydrographic surveys can result in many types of information that are used for planning inland dredging projects. Novel geophysical survey systems provide detailed information on sediment composition and pollution levels of dredge spoil. Each data set alone does not give all information needed for proper planning. The combination of data from different sensors provides practical results that can help to reduce the costs of dredging and disposal, reduce risk and improve the quality of the dredging work.<P>   Inland dredging activities require careful planning. Many inland water systems are dredged for nautical reasons, but the pollution levels of the... (read more)
