Dynamic Positioning Conference Programme

The Dynamic Positioning Committee of the Marine Technology Society has issued an Advance Programme for the 2010 Dynamic Positioning Conference. The Annual Conference will be held at the Westchase Hilton, Houston 12th and 13th October 2010. The Conference traditionally places a strong emphasis on new technology and this year is no exception with sessions on DP in The Arctic and New Applications, as well as a full session on Quality Assurance. As in the past, there will also be sessions on Design, Sensors, Thrusters and Operations. Expanded exhibit space will allow a larger number of vendors to display their products... (read more)

Onboard Training System Wins Dynamic Positioning Award

The ‘Onboard Training System’ (OTS), developed by Kongsberg Maritime company SMSC, won the Dynamic Positioning Award at the Offshore Support Journal Conference, Awards & Exhibition in London last week. The system allowing users to control a real vessel under DP, but within a simulated environment, was recognised by the award judges as a completely unique and positive new approach to Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) training. With the OTS concept, the vessel is controlled in a normal manner by a deck officer on the bridge, either by the use of manual controls or by the use of Dynamic Positioning (DP). The... (read more)

Dynamic Positioning System for Inland Vessels

Recently RH Marine successfully commissioned the Rhodium 4500 Dynamic Positioning and Tracking System on the new flagship of Hakkers. Dynamic positioning for inland multipurpose vessels is complex since these ships have to take a variety of movements, loading conditions and currents into account. Therefore dynamic positioning is quite new and unexplored in this market. RH Marine integrated the Rhodium DPT4500 system on board to help Hakkers maximise the operational capabilities together with sister company Radio Holland who supplied and installed the navigational sensors.  Thanks to the flexibility of the Rhodium DPT4500 system, the challenging thruster configuration and inland specific circumstances... Workshop Success Influences Future of Dynamic Positioning

Sonardyne International, in conjunction with Guidance Navigation and Veripos, UK, recently held a one-day user workshop focusing on the latest advances in Dynamic Positioning (DP) reference sensor technologies. More than 50 industry experts from a wide selection of companies gathered in Houston, USA, to review current Position Monitoring Equipment (PME) solutions and to discuss the industry’s future requirements. Significant focus was given to the integration of inertial technologies with acoustics, GNSS, laser and radar sensors, examining practical experience and real world examples whilst discussing opportunities for DP integration that would improve performance, increase availability and reduce risk. Other discussions throughout... (read more)

New K-Pos Dynamic Positioning Controller

The new K-Pos Dynamic Positioning Controller (DPC), based on Kongsberg System Technology, has been shown for the first time on the Kongsberg Maritime stand at ONS 2006. The unique design of the new DPC extends the principles of system segregation and redundancy that result in the robustness and high system availability of the Kongsberg Maritime K-Pos Dynamic Positioning system. The system utilises a scalable module concept which corresponds to the overall architecture of a DP system and may be equipped with up to three processor units, supporting single, dual and triple redundant DP control systems. The processors are synchronized on... (read more)
