Dear Sir,

I always follow the discussions in Hydro International with great interest, especially your articles on electronic navigation that appeared in the previous issue. Jeppesen Marine sees both the importance as well as the advantages of electronic navigation. As such, we support any initiative that increases the use of ECDIS and ECS systems, both in regulated and unregulated markets. Jeppesen Marine is one of the strongest supporters of electronic navigation, especially when you consider our heritage of nearly 75 years of innovative navigational support in the aviation industry. By combining this expertise with the leadership and experience of C-Map, we are... (read more)

Hydrographic Society Benelux

Hydrographic Society Benelux Celebrates WHDA workshop on International Hydrographic Co-operation – supporting safe navigation emphasised the importance of the World Hydrography Day for the Hydrographic Society Benelux. ‘As it Is’

The Belgian Hydrographer
The fascinating world of hydrography confronts the current hydrographer with an interesting challenge: to serve a wide variety of customers as quickly as possible with a wide variety of products, from high-quality hydrographic data to tailor-made digital products. On a world scale Belgium is a relatively small country, with only 60km of coastline. However, one of busiest sea routes passes across the Belgian Continental Shelf and there is heavy shipping traffic along the River Scheldt to the harbours of Antwerp and Ghent. These navigation channels are characterised by highly dynamic morphology. In order to optimise its hydrographic tasks, in September... (read more)

Charting Aspects of the Volvo Ocean Race Stranding

Facts and Findings from the Accident
During Leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi, Team Vestas Wind ran aground on the night of 29 November 2014 on the Cargados Carajos Shoals. The shoals were shown on the portion of the electronic chart displayed onboard, but only as a blue patch enclosed by a 200m isobath with scattered soundings - the shoalest of which the navigator reported to be 40m. The fact that the feature comprised low lying islands with a fringing drying reef is only apparent when zooming in sufficiently on the Electronic Chart System (ECS). What are the factors that... A Chart Distributor Perspective

The failure of ECDIS versus the apparent success of ECS
In its current state of development, ECDIS is not only a commercial failure but it is also a clear demonstration of the fact that a number of Hydrographic Offices and IHO have been unable to capitalise upon their monopolistic grasp on the distribution of official paper charts and transfer the business model to ENCs. The first question that comes to mind is: should we use the same business model? The second question should be: can ENCs and paper products complement each other rather than compete? This failure is so embarrassing because the concept of ECDIS has been discussed at length,... (read more)
