Fugro Completes Deepwater AUV Surveys for Shell in US Gulf of Mexico

Fugro has completed several high-resolution geophysical surveys in the US Gulf of Mexico for the Shell International Exploration and Production Company. The project required data collection over multiple deepwater lease blocks in the greater Perdido and Mars development areas to support clearance of potential environmental, engineering, geological and archaeological hazards ahead of planned drilling activities. As the preferred contractor for this project, Fugro deployed a Hugin autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from its purpose-built survey vessel, the Fugro Brasilis. The Hugin AUV is depth-rated to 3000m and equipped with a multibeam echosounder, side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling sensors. As such, Fugro... (read more)

USV Completes First Autonomous Circumnavigation of Antarctica

High-quality and Reliable Data Is Needed for Research Use
A 7m (23ft) long, wind-powered unmanned surface vehicle (USV) has become the first unmanned system to circumnavigate Antarctica. Known as SD 1020 and equipped with a suite of science-grade sensors, the vehicle collected data in previously uncharted waters, enabling new key insights into ocean and climate processes. Known as SD 1020 and equipped with a suite of science-grade sensors, the vehicle collected data in previously uncharted waters, enabling new key insights into ocean and climate processes. USV SD 1020 left for the 196-day mission from Southport in Bluff, New Zealand, on 19 January 2019. It returned to the same port on 3 August after sailing over 22,000km (13,670 miles or 11,879 nautical miles) around Antarctica. During the mission, the vehicle survived freezing temperatures, 15m (50ft) waves, 130km/h (80mph) winds... (read more)

Ocean Discovery XPRIZE Winners Talk Tech in Tokyo with Japanese PM

Prior to being awarded the four million dollar grand prize in the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE this May, the members of the international GEBCO-Nippon Foundation Alumni Team had found precious few opportunities to all meet face to face. For much of their three-year journey in the competition, communication was carried out remotely through email and Skype. A recent visit to Tokyo, however, offered a chance to sit down together and plan their next steps as a team and a broader network of alumni – as well as discuss the importance of ocean mapping with the Japanese Prime Minister. Meeting the PM... (read more)

Fugro Succeeds with Seep Survey License Sales Offshore Newfoundland

Fugro and partner Amplified Geochemical Imaging (AGI), are reporting recent success selling multiple licences for data from frontier regions offshore of the east coast of Canada. The data was acquired during two separate hydrocarbon seep surveys in the Orphan Basin (2017) and Carson Basin (2018), both situated on the continental margin of Newfoundland. The comprehensive data packages are being licensed by Fugro and include multi-beam echosounder data (bathymetry, backscatter intensity and water column), sub-bottom profiler data, heat flow measurements and shipboard geochemical screening analyses; advanced geochemical analyses, including biomarkers on select samples, are also included. Heat Flow and Geochemical Sampling... (read more)

MMT Performs Geophysical Soil Investigation of Dutch Wind Farm Zone

Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland has awarded MMT a contract to perform a geophysical soil investigation of the Ten Noorden van de Waddeneilanden Wind Farm Zone. The objective of the investigation is to contribute to the bathymetrical, morphological and geological understanding of the area. Ultimately the data will be used by offshore wind farm developers to prepare bids for this site. A high-resolution and accuracy ground model ensures that developers can prepare their bids with the least amount of uncertainty, which helps lower the price of developing these OWFs. Project preparations are currently underway, with the fieldwork planned to be performed in July... (read more)

Exploring the Deepest Points on Planet Earth

Report on The Five Deeps Expedition
As extreme explorer Victor Vescovo continues his round-the-world expedition to become the first person to descend to the five deepest points in the Earth’s five oceans using the custom-built deep submergence vehicle Limiting Factor, it prompts the question: ‘Do we know as much about the deepest places on our planet as we thought?’ As extreme explorer Victor Vescovo continues his round-the-world expedition to become the first person to descend to the five deepest points in the Earth’s five oceans using the custom-built deep submergence vehicle Limiting Factor, it prompts the question: ‘Do we know as much about the deepest places on our planet as we thought?’ Today, the best global maps of the oceans have a resolution of 30 arc-second grid cells (926m at the equator). Approximately 82% of the grid cells do not include a single depth measurement (Weatherall et al., 2015), and the percentage of the seafloor that has been directly... (read more)

Definitive Global Map of Ocean Floor Doubles Data

The data available to produce the definitive map of the world’s ocean floor has more than doubled, just two years after the launch of an international effort to produce a complete map by the year 2030. Following the efforts of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, coverage of the world’s ocean floor has now increased from 6% to 15%. This is equivalent to around 32,000,000 square kilometres of bathymetric data, an area greater than the landmass of African. Heeding the call from Seabed 2030, the industry is now making significant contributions to the mission with around 570,000 square kilometres of... (read more)

Fugro Supports 2 Ocean Mapping Initiatives with Crowdsourced Bathymetry Contribution

Fugro recently contributed more than 110,000 square kilometres of high-resolution bathymetry data in the North Atlantic Ocean to help improve the quality and coverage of seabed mapping in the region. The dataset, which covers an area the size of Iceland, was delivered to two complementary programmes: the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AORA) and The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project (Seabed 2030). Crowdsourced Bathymetry “As is common across the world’s oceans, much of the Atlantic lacks the modern bathymetry data needed to properly understand the seafloor, its resources, and its processes,” said David Millar, Fugro’s government accounts director in the Americas....
