Doubling of Data Available for Definitive Global Map of Ocean Floor

The data available to produce the definitive map of the world’s ocean floor has more than doubled, just two years after the launch of an international effort to produce a complete map by the year 2030. Following the efforts of The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, coverage of the world’s ocean floor has now increased from 6 per cent to 15 per cent. Fugro Supports 2 Ocean Mapping Initiatives with Crowdsourced Bathymetry Contribution

Fugro recently contributed more than 110,000 square kilometres of high-resolution bathymetry data in the North Atlantic Ocean to help improve the quality and coverage of seabed mapping in the region. The dataset, which covers an area the size of Iceland, was delivered to two complementary programmes: the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AORA) and The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project (Seabed 2030). Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada Inspects the High Arctic

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Manitoba will use a SEAMOR Marine Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to inspect the High Arctic area which remains frozen year-round. The Chinook ROV will take part in research and evaluating ways to protect this special ecological region. The vehicle will also be used to conduct ecosystem identification and benthic surveys (underwater mapping of the seafloor) and inspection of first-year ice and multi-year ice. Sonar Plays Integral Role in First Human Reaching Deepest Point in Atlantic

Kongsberg Maritime has announced that the EM 124 sonar, installed aboard the DSSV Pressure Drop, played a key role in the deepest solo human submersible dive completed by the Five Deeps Expedition.
