The Making of RV 'Kronprins Haakon'

New Norwegian Ice-breaking Research Vessel
Norway is a maritime country with a very long coastline, plus it is very much a polar nation with 80% of its sea territory and 45% of its land mass north of the Arctic circle. It is the only country with territorial claims both in the Arctic and the Antarctic. In spite of this, Norway has not had a purpose-built polar research vessel since Roald Amundsen’s 'Maud' (1917), having instead relied on converted commercial vessels for such purposes. That has all changed, however, now that 'Kronprins Haakon' has come into service. This article provides insight into the making of this new multi-purpose research vessel.... (read more)

WASSP Announces Solutions to Improve Sounder and Sonar Systems

WASSP, the professional multibeam sounder that delivers water column and seabed profiling with 224 beams offering significant improvements in speed and accuracy over conventional singlebeam echosounders, has announced the launch of an innovative new Key Pulse and patent-pending Interference Management System including automated frequency and bandwidth algorithm. One major problem faced by manufacturers of sonar systems is that underwater environments are often noisy due to other acoustic devices operating in the same local body of water. Noise levels or interference caused by interoperating acoustic equipment vary widely depending on the operating parameters of the equipment and the water column. This... (read more)

Fugro’s AUV Images Bring Search for Lost Sub AE1 to Successful Close

Fugro’s role in an expedition to find HMAS AE1 has helped to solve Australia’s oldest naval mystery, 103 years after the First World War Australian submarine vanished off Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. In waters over 300 metres deep, Fugro deployed its autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) from Survey Vessel 'Fugro Equator'. On 19 December 2017 an object of interest was located, and further inspection confirmed that it was AE1. Using specialised survey technology, including a multibeam echosounder mounted on the hull of Fugro Equator and its AUV, Echo Surveyor 5, Fugro scanned the seafloor to collect detailed data. The AUV flew... (read more)
