Drone for Aquatic Habitat Surveys

BioSonics and The Oceanscience Group (USA) have released a portable, remotely operated habitat-mapping survey boat, the Z-Boat 1800MX. A combination of Oceanscience's remote hydrographic survey boat and BioSonics' MX echosounder, the Z-Boat 1800MX allows researchers to obtain quantitative measurements of aquatic vegetation and substrate distribution without the expense and effort of launching a manned boat. With the Z-Boat's position displayed on navigation software on the shore acquisition computer in real time, guiding the boat along planned survey lines is aided by on-board GPS. Z-Boat with MB1 Multibeam Demonstrated

Teledyne Oceanscience, in partnership with Teledyne Odom Hydrographic, unveiled a demonstration of a multibeam echosounder-equipped Z-Boat 1800 autonomous remote survey boat at the U.S. Hydro 2015 Conference in National Harbor, MD, USA. With the Teledyne Odom MB1 on board, up to 512 beams may be configured in a 120deg swath, representing a potentially enormous improvement in data availability versus the previous single-beam sonar options. BioSonics and Ping DSP Sonar Technologies Combine for Seagrass Surveys

Two sonar manufacturers from the Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada) have joined forces in a cooperative effort aimed at improving efficiencies in aquatic habitat mapping. Seattle-based BioSonics and Ping DSP, from Victoria, BC, recently conducted trials to evaluate the effectiveness of a Ping DSP 3D sidescan sonar combined with a BioSonics MX single-beam echosounder as a means for locating and quantifying seagrass beds. Kongsberg EN250 for HOV

After the delivery of two Kongsberg hydrographic systems for HOV vessels, Bennex Holland BV has now received an order for a Kongsberg EN250 single beam echosounder with spare parts and an in-house developed interface for connecting four 50kHz transducers with special interfacing to the onboard computer systems. This special interface contains data information and indicates which transducer is connected to the echosounder system. For many years Bennex Holland BV has been developing special interfacing for several applications inside acoustic systems for the RDN. The new system will be delivered in October 2003. (read more)

Triton Expands Industry-Standard XTF Format

Triton Imaging, Inc has released of enhancements to its industry-standard eXtended Triton Format (XTF) specification. The new Version 18 of the XTF specification adds two new sonar manufacturer-specific datagrams to the standard format. The first expands XTF to satisfy the special requirements of some single-beam echosounders as well as the newer technology of multi-transducer echosounders. The second improvement modernises XTF to accommodate the latest generation of side scan sonars that use a weighting factor to improve dynamic range and increase image quality. (read more)

Multi-beams and Single Beams for Royal Netherlands Navy

Simrad bv has been awarded a second contract by the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) for delivery of 3 EM3002 dual-head high-resolution Multi-beam (MB) systems and 2 EA400 Single-beam (SB) 38/200-kHz echosounders. The MB and SB systems will be installed on the survey launches for assisting the two naval hydrographic survey vessels, which are already equipped with EM3000 dual-head MB and EA600 SB echosounders. The MB and SB systems will work with the third-party data acquisition software QINSy. Delivery and commission is planned for December 2005. (read more)

Second Sonar System for Chilean Navy

S.H.O.A. Servico Hidrografico y Oceanografico de la Armada de Chile (The Chilean Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service) have recently taken delivery of a second new RESON Sonar System. The complete system will be installed on the launch ALBATROSS, and will aid the Chilean Navy with the development of new nautical cartography for Chilean Waters.     The total system comprises SeaBat 7125-E - High resolution multibeam sonar, the NaviSound 410 Deepwater hydrographic and broadband echosounder, and the PDS2000 Software package.
