Oceanology International, the world's premier event for the marine science and ocean technology community, will this year be held in London, UK, from 9th to 11th March. Over 6,600 attendees are expected to drop in on this event, visiting the world largest exhibition with over 500 suppliers, the associated biennial conference, or are attracted by the many vessels and networking opportunities. In the third week of March, the entire marine world will be gathering in London, as this is where the biannual Oceanology International event is taking place. The exhibition and the conference bring together technological and scientific developments. With over 550 exhibitors and a state of the art conference programme OI12 is definitely the place to be. In the night of 14 April 1912, the unthinkable happened. The mightiest ship afloat, the brand new White Star Line ship Titanic, was on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. The ship was advertised as unsinkable. And, if unsinkable, why should there be adequate lifeboats for all the passengers and crew? The ship departed from Southampton on 10 April. Echo Sounders versus Air Bubbles in Research Vessels

Lessons from Experience

Within echo sounding circles it is well known that air bubbles may have a negative effect on echo sounding systems. This article briefly presents the German way of dealing with air bubbles from sweep-down and cavitation processes as well as our experiences with the last three large research vessels (RVs Polarstern, Meteor and Maria S. Merian). The practical experience resulted in the development of an optimised new hull form for the replacement of RV Sonne. East Australia Region Commander (CMDR) John Maschke of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and chair of the East Australia Region of the Australasian Hydrographic Society was recently elected to the position of fellow within the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI). John has had a long and varied career in the RAN, predominantly within the Australian Hydrographic Service. After receiving his education in Sydney, he briefly entered the Australian Public Service in 1973 before joining the RAN on 2nd April 1974.
