30+ Years of Hydrographic Education

Category A Programme of Hamburg’s HafenCity Universities

A hydrographic education programme has been offered in Hamburg for more than 30 years. The programme was first offered in 1985 as an addition to an existing programme in general surveying, and the course became fully recognised as a Category A programme by the IHO in 1990. The Hydrography programme has been integrated as a specialisation in the two-year MSc in Geodesy and Geoinformatics at HafenCity University since 2009. Hydrographic Education During a Lockdown

Experiences in the Netherlands

On 12 March, the Dutch government decided to ‘lock down’ all activities involving multiple persons, including education. That decision immediately affected the hydrographic institutions in the Netherlands. The Netherlands has an active four-year Cat. A course in Ocean Technology at the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences – Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB), and a 3+3 month Cat. B course at Skilltrade. Both had to cope with the lockdown in different ways due to their different set-ups and student populations. Benelux Hydrographers emphasized on international attitude education

A meeting of the Hydrographic Society Benelux on Friday 22 September 2006 in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) put education for hydrographers in the picture. Education for future surveyors and hydrographers was the subject of an interactive workshop that was held in the Scheepvaart and Transport College (STC). STC will start an IHO HND/HNC-education in January 2007. Input for this training has been provided by various organisations, amongst them Skilltrade. Cooperation in Science, Technology and Education in Gran Canaria

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Germany), the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) have joined forces to boost marine research activities, education and technology in Gran Canaria. New Charity to Support Global Maritime Safety and Education

The Nautical Institute (NI) has announced the formal launch of the Nautical Institute Foundation (NIF), a new charitable initiative that will allow the NI to extend the scope and reach of its current activities. Establishment of a National Hydrographic Committee

It has been proposed that maritime nations should consider establishing an NHC to co-operate in the development and sustainability of marine and hydrographic industries. The members of an NHC are comprised of agencies and education institutions related to these industries. The National Hydrographic Office (NHO) should be appointed as chairman of the NHC, responsible as the representative of the committee to preside the meetings or any other activities. Hydrographic Society Benelux

On Friday 22nd September the regular workshop of the Hydrographic Society Benelux (HSB) was hosted by the Shipping and Transport College (STC) in Rotterdam. This new building on the edge of Rotterdam Harbour houses a college for education in all aspects of shipping and transport. The workshop started with a short obituary for Cor Don, former president of the HSB.
