HYDRO 2007 – “Focus on Asia' HYDRO 2007 was held in the Cairns Convention Centre, Cairns, Australia from 22 to 24 November 2007. Workshops started from 21st November on topics such as CARIS, HYPACK,education and heritage. Education Workshop An education workshop was organised by Venessa O’Connell for Wednesday 21st November 2007. Nicolàs de Hilster

After his education in hydrography, Nicolàs de Hilster was employed by Osiris from 1989 to 1996. He then moved to the Survey Department of Rijkswaterstaat (GAM-Department). In 2000, Nicolàs became the founding owner of Starmountain Survey & Consultancy. (read more)

Australian Hydrographic Service

The Service reports that HMAS Melville recently completed a wide-ranging surveying season covering much of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in support of the PNG Hydrographic and Charting Redevelopment Project. This is jointly sponsored by the Australian Hydrographic Service, a service within the Royal Australian Navy, and the PNG Maritime Safety Authority and funded by the Asian Development Bank with the aim of providing new charts, including ENCs, and improving existing charts in the PNG area. Barbara Bond

Barbara Bond spent her career in public service as cartographic researcher in MoD, initially in the forerunner of the Defence Geographic Centre and latterly as the senior civilian Director and Deputy Chief Executive of the UK Hydrographic Office, the first Defence Agency. On retirement, became an independent consultant, advising UK government departments on graduate recruitment and international commercial companies on training in data capture for marine applications. Russian Arctic Team Maps Five Islands Found by a Student

A Russian Arctic expedition has mapped five small islands in the Far North, discovered by a student analysing a glacier's retreat in satellite photos, the BBC reports. Before Marina Migunova's discovery in 2016, the islands were hidden under the Nansen Glacier, also known as Vylka, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The islands Marina found are in Vize Bay, on the northeastern coast of Novaya Zemlya and range in size from 900 to 54,500sq m.
