Maritime Toolbar (MTB) for Esri Users

UK-based OceanWise has developed a Maritime Toolbar (MTB) for ArcMap so maritime users on an Esri platform can take advantage of the functionality previously only available to Cadcorp SIS users. The toolbar includes 31 tools that can support existing workflows and increase productivity - thus improving the return on GIS investment. This new add-in extends the GIS functionality commonly used within the maritime sector to ArcMap 10.1 and above. Benefits of MTB include: Streamlining everyday tasks to improve efficiency Simplified batch processing tools to automate repetitive or large-scale processing Raster processing tools including hill shading, slope analysis, contouring and a... AAG Presidential Award for Esri Scientist

Esri chief scientist Dawn J. Wright, PhD, has received the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Presidential Achievement Award. Presented at the AAG annual meeting on 28th February 2012, the award recognises Wright's outstanding work as a scientist, researcher, author and advocate for marine conservation, and her contributions to geographic science. AAG president Audrey L. Kobayashi said that Wright's work to build geospatial technology standards for ocean mapping has enabled the scientific community to share information and collaborate on research projects. She has championed geographic information systems for marine research that are laying the groundwork for more sustainable ocean resources policies.... (read more)

Maritime Professionals Find Opportunities at Esri User Conference

There are vast applications for geographic information system (GIS) technology. Nowhere was this more apparent than the floors of the San Diego Convention Center, USA, during this year's annual Esri User Conference (Esri UC). The massive space was occupied by the many users, companies, government agencies and enthusiasts who benefit from Esri's ArcGIS platform. The showcase and networking event was not geared toward expert users only, however, and nor is Esri technology limited to land applications. The event had dozens of maritime-related activities and was not exclusive to 'experts'. There is a large group of users in the maritime field that consumes, rather than... (read more)

US Army and ESRI to Develop New GIS Technology

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Hydrologic Engineering Center and ESRI will cooperate on developing a new generation of geographic information system (GIS) technology for hydrologic engineering and ecological analysis. The Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC), based in Davis (CA, USA), and ESRI signed a three-year cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) that will focus on adding a geospatial analysis component to HEC's software that analyzes how an ecosystem (i.e., plants, animals, and soil) reacts to water flow, developing terrain models and terrain representation for hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and publishing HEC's modeling techniques with ArcGIS Server. HEC designed a successful... (read more)

EdgeTech and Esri Cooperating on Data to ENC Solution

EdgeTech has entered into a cooperative engagement with Esri. Utilising Esri’s ArcGIS for Maritime platform in combination with the EdgeTech 6205 sonar, customers have access to real-time, high-resolution, three-dimensional (3D) maps of the seafloor and electronic navigation charts stored and accessible in the cloud, anywhere, anytime and on any device. To meet the emerging requirement of creating hydrographic products, including charts, more efficiently and accurately, the two companies have collaborated and streamlined the process of bathymetric data collection, management and production. Customers can quickly produce and access IHO S-57 compatible data which can be published and used directly from the ArcGIS... (read more)

Navy Oceanography Signs Three-year Agreement with Esri

Rear Admiral Tim Gallaudet, commander of the US Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NAVMETOCCOM),has signed a three-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Esri. Gallaudet said the CRADA is to provide battlespace awareness and environmental information to the warfighters that yields better decisions made faster than the adversary. The Esri software and system allows detailed geospatial data to be analysed with all its time and geographic references. Strong spatial analytics and enterprise collaboration capability link Navy METOC resources with Navy commanders at sea. This marriage of analytics with METOC data help achieve the NAVMETOCCOM goal of Battlespace on Demand.... (read more)
