EMUs Contribute to Understanding of the Ocean

Esri has announced a new way of measuring the ocean: ecological marine units (EMUs). Esri and USGS collected a series of global measurements representing the ocean's physical and chemical properties most likely to drive ecosystem responses. From the millions of measurements taken, 37 physically and chemically distinct volumetric regions, or EMUs, were statistically derived. EMUs differ from existing maps of marine ecoregions since they are globally comprehensive, data-driven and 3D. The primary data source is NOAA's World Ocean Atlas. Built by a public-private partnership led by Esri and the USGS, EMUs provide a standardised, rigorous, and ecologically meaningful set of... (read more)

Access to S-57 Data in ArcGIS

Esri ArcGIS software can now be used to visualise S-57 data with the symbology that the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) requires. The Esri S-57 Viewer can be downloaded free of charge. Esri S-57 Viewer is an add-on to ArcGIS for Desktop. The viewer allows users to query and analyse S-57 datasets in a GIS-centric environment, overlay S-57 data with other mapping data, such as bathymetric, topographic, environmental and satellite imagery layers, and apply various IHO S-52 properties such as Colour Scheme and Safety Contour Depth. Maritime data users can continue to leverage their investment in Esri technology by installing S‑57... (read more)

New Edition of Modeling Our World

Modeling Our World: The ESRI Guide to Geodatabase Concepts from Esri Press is a comprehensive work that explains the fundamental geographic information concepts underlying the geodatabase model and its use. The fully revised second edition reflects the new features and functionality available in ArcGIS 10. The book details the use of geodatabase structural elements to ensure spatial and attribute integrity in data modelling and geographic analyses. In addition, it explains how to manage an organisation's workflow and provides strategies to scale geodatabases from small projects up to multiple departments across a large organisation."Professional GIS [geographic information system] users have the... NOAA's NCS II Centralises Chart Production

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, USA) has implemented a new nautical charting system based on Esri GIS technology to produce more navigational products than ever before without increasing its budget or personnel needs. The new system, NCS II, is based on Esri Nautical Solution, and it allows NOAA to centralise the management of hydrographic data for US coastal waters.   Since accepting Esri Nautical Solution as part of its production system in 2009, NOAA has been transferring product production from disparate systems to NCS II. As a result, NOAA will produce more than 2,000 nautical charts that meet... (read more)

IODE Receives ArcGIS Online

ESRI Belux has donated 50 user licenses of its ArcGIS Online to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Project Office for International Oceanographic Data Exchange (IODE), Ostend, Belgium. To mark the occasion, the governor of the Province of West Flanders (and chairman of the Flanders Marine Institute, VLIZ), Mr Carl Decaluw√©, invited ESRI representatives as well as the director of VLIZ and Project Office staff to his official residence in Bruges, Belgium. In his speech Mr Decaluwé said that as chairman of the VLIZ the governor is particularly proud that UNESCO - IOC Project Office for IODE (International Data and Information... (read more)

World's First Ocean Basemap In ArcGIS

Esri has created and released a new, comprehensive map of the world's oceans and coastal areas. The Ocean Basemap is now available as a cached map service in ArcGIS Online. The first basemap of its kind, the Ocean Basemap is designed to support a variety of maritime GIS applications. Esri's Ocean Basemap greatly expands the ocean content that's currently available in Esri's online basemaps. Traditional basemaps of the ocean have small scales and only include coarse-grained views of features. The Esri Ocean Basemap includes fine-grained bathymetric and altimetric data from coastal areas, where most of the human activity takes place.... (read more)

Development of UCSB Ocean Use Application

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), USA, has officially launched SeaSketch, an ocean planning tool supported by Esri, USA. Conservationists, planners and ocean resource managers are now able to use the GIS application and Esri's ArcGIS Online to plan sustainable ocean use management. Esri's support of the UCSB SeaSketch project is a component of the Esri Ocean GIS Initiative, which allows people to positively impact the future through a deeper, geographic understanding of the ocean. Researchers from the UCSB McClintock Lab designed SeaSketch to study human impacts on the ocean environment and plan responsible resource management. An agency that... (read more)

Coast Guard Using Sensors and Satellite Imaging to Track Vessels in Real Time

Esri has announced that Argentina's coast guard, Prefectura Naval, and Aeroterra S.A. have partnered to implement Esri's ArcGIS platform for a real-time tracking system. The new system, called Guardacostas Pro, uses a combination of satellite imaging and signal processing to monitor vessels for illegal activities such as drug smuggling and fish poaching in the coastal waters of Argentina’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). As Argentina's coast guard, Prefectura Naval deploys patrol vessels, helicopters and aircraft spotters to protect its economic interests and to guard against the decline of its fishery industry. This year, the Guardacostas Pro system allowed Prefectura Naval to... (read more)
