Challenging 6G Demo

Sonardyne's 6G (Sixth Generation) acoustic positioning technology was demonstrated to industry professionals during in-water demonstrations in Stonehaven Harbour on the east coast of Scotland. For three days last week, a Long BaseLine (LBL) positioning network of six Compatt 6 transponders was set up against the walls of the harbour, in depths of as little as two metres. A Dunker 6 LBL and telemetry transceiver was then used to perform an array calibration and collect acoustic range data.     Chief surveyors, project managers and equipment rental specialists were able to get hands-on with 6G by controlling the system from a... Subsea Array Planning

Beyond Traditional Long Baseline Transducers
The development of deepwater and ultra-deepwater subsea fields is one of the greatest challenges facing the offshore oil and gas industry today. The depths involved present a host of engineering challenges during both the development phase and the life of field maintenance programmes. A critical component of the development and maintenance of subsea oil and gas fields common to virtually all operations is accurate subsea positioning. This article focuses on the latest technology used in deepwater positioning and on the development of new planning software and techniques to support the advances made in positioning systems. Subsea Positioning Subsea positioning is... (read more)

Acoustically Aided INS and Lidar

Fast 3D Subsea Mobile Mapping and Contactless Metrology
Aerial mobile mapping using Lidar and GNSS-aided inertial navigation has revolutionised the efficiency of land and shallow-water bathymetric surveying. Now, fast ultra‑high resolution subsea mobile mapping is approaching. Millimetre-resolution Lidar sensors have emerged in parallel with major advances in tightly integrated subsea inertial navigation. Wideband Doppler velocity navigation (DVL), Long BaseLine (LBL) observations, Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping (SLAM), automatic calibration and forwards-backwards post-processing, join with Acoustically Aided INS (AAINS) to provide robust dynamic sub‑millimetre relative accuracy and centimetric-level accuracy over wide areas. Successful deepwater ROV trials in the Monterey Canyon, California, USA, have demonstrated the extremely efficient dynamic future of... (read more)

Two New INS Solutions Launched

Two separate Inertial Navigation Systems are arrived at CDL during at this year’s Ocean Business event in Southampton, UK. The MiniPOS3 and MiniSense2 offer INS solutions to suit either end of the cost - performance spectrum.   CDL’s most advanced system ever, the MiniPOS3, is a full Inertial Navigation System (INS) providing highly accurate heading, pitch and roll alongside multiple aiding options including USBL, LBL, DVL and GPS to provide a positioning solution that eliminates almost all of the inherent noise and availability issues of traditional positioning systems. Developed from the successful MiniPOS2 system the addition of USBL/LBL aiding provides... (read more)

Dynamic Laser Scanning Set to Innovate Metrology Techniques

In December 2016, DOF Subsea (DOF) conducted a demonstration of dynamic underwater laser scanning as a replacement for traditional metrology techniques at The Underwater Centre in Fort William, Scotland. The demo showcased 2G Robotics’ and Sonardyne’s complete dynamic survey solution. The solution integrates 2G Robotics’ underwater laser scanner, the ULS-500 PRO, with Sonardyne’s inertial navigation sensor, SPRINT; Syrinx DVL and 6G acoustics. Seatronics, channel partner for 2G Robotics and provider of Sonardyne rental equipment, provided sensors and project/technician support. LBL and Photogrammetry Historically, metrology campaigns using Long BaseLine (LBL) acoustics and photogrammetry have demanded significant vessel and ROV time. Additionally, LBL... (read more)

GAS to Provide Survey Services during Pipelay Installation

GAS (Geological Assistance & Services), Italy, has been awarded a long-term contract from SAIPEM to provide offshore survey services on board the dive-support vessel Akademik Tofik Ismayilov. The work will be performed during the installation of the export and infield pipelines for the Stage II development of the Shah Deniz field, which will ultimately deliver gas to Europe from Azerbaijan. The field is located 90km offshore Azerbaijan, in water depths between 75m and 550m. The contract’s scope of work includes touch down monitoring during the pipelay, as-laid, as-built and out-of-straightness surveys over 360km of pipelines. Since 2012, GAS has built... (read more)
