In 2009, a research project was implemented to study the potential socio-economic impacts of climate change upon coastal communities in Canada and the Caribbean. Grande Riviere in Trinidad and Tobago, one of the study sites, is an important nesting site for leatherback turtles. Turtle watching, part of eco-tourism conducted in that part of the country, is an important source of income for the community. Any significant rise in mean sea level may negatively impact the turtles’ nesting sites and consequently negatively impact Grande Riviere’s socio-economic wellbeing. CUBE Terrain Modelling

Developed by Brian Calder of University New Hampshire, CUBE is a combined terrain modelling, data cleaning and data reduction software for use as a processing tool for high density multi-beam echo sounder data sets. CUBE will estimate the depth at predefined grid node points, making use of all available soundings in the vicinity of the node. Capturing Convection: Glider Validated Modelling

Can Underwater Gliders Be Used to Check Ocean Forecast Accuracy?
Recently, three unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) were deployed in the northwest Mediterranean Sea to monitor open-ocean convection via changes in the local density structure. Mixed-layer depth and thermocline response to buoyancy flux were extrapolated from in-situ profiles and used to infer the occurrence of deepwater formation events. The high-resolution data set acquired has been used to assess ocean forecast model performance in this area. Originally constructed in the North East of England in 1888, the SS Polwell was used by German forces at the start of World War I. However, early on in the war, the vessel was captured off Gibraltar by the British Admiralty and requisitioned into service as a defensively armed merchant ship. Hydrography for Continental Streamflow Modelling

Water Data Standards Enable New Models and Applications
Land surface hydrography now supports the modelling of continental-scale streamflow at high resolution and in near real time. The US National Hydrography Dataset contains about 2.7 million stream segments averaging 2km in length. This database establishes a national topological network of streams and their drainage areas. The network is now being used in computational models of streamflow that can be run in just 12 minutes for the entire USA, and the approach is also starting to be applied globally. 3D Modelling Software for Marine Mining

AuruMar, headquartered in South Africa, has purchased Maptek Vulcan 3D modelling software for its marine continental shelf exploration operations. AuruMar will apply Vulcan GeoModeller to the mineral resource development programme for its 26 mining leases offshore of Nome, Alaska. The company wanted to be able to look at and model its geological data in 3D, according to Urban Burger, AuruMar geologist. Modelling Tool for Coastal Adaptation to Sea-level Rise

Blue Marble Geographics (USA) has been selected by the New England Environmental Finance Center (NEEFC) from the Edmund Muskie School of Policy Research at the University of Southern Maine to develop the software interface for a coastal climatic-disruption modelling tool entitled COAST.
