East Australia Region Commander (CMDR) John Maschke of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and chair of the East Australia Region of the Australasian Hydrographic Society was recently elected to the position of fellow within the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI). John has had a long and varied career in the RAN, predominantly within the Australian Hydrographic Service. After receiving his education in Sydney, he briefly entered the Australian Public Service in 1973 before joining the RAN on 2nd April 1974. Global Navigation Satellite Systems

Infrastructure Status and Developments
The concept of GNSS was first introduced by the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission (EC) and Eurocontrol in the early nineties. They defined requirements for a European GPS augmentation system, GNSS-1, and a full European satellite navigation system, GNSS-2, later together renamed EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System) and Galileo. Synthetic Aperture Sonar Challenges

Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) has been under active development for decades. The technique is particularly well suited for autonomous underwater vehicles, and it is expected that SAS will replace traditional side-scan sonars for many ‘high-end’ AUV applications in the years to come. Improving Overall Resolution of Bathymetric Survey

Integrated Use of Multi-beam Echo Sounder and Towed Interferometric Sonar
Designing offshore engineering facilities requires large amounts of information. To acquire it, suites of engineering and geophysical surveys are run, which as a rule include such techniques of seabed and sub-bottom investigation as seismic profiling, acoustic, magnetic and bathymetric surveys. Obtaining accurate and detailed seabed bathymetry is extremely important because the quality of other surveys depends on the quality of the bathymetry.
