Surveying for Offshore Wind

Developing the Third Market
Many giants are drilling for oil and gas: the gold of the sea. Since the beginning of the new millennium, however, a new kind of energy potential of the sea has been discovered: wind energy. The fastest way to create substantial amounts of this green energy is to build offshore wind farms. The seas have space enough, the wind yield is higher than on shore and the visual impact, which is so often a difficult hurdle to overcome on shore, is not an issue at sea. Wind energy is characterised by renewability and sustainability, both of which are important issues, as we... (read more)

Offshore Survey Equipment Order

Chinese oil company CNOOC has placed an order with A.P. van den Berg for the delivery of a WISON-APB seafloor survey system. COSL, subsidiary of this company, will use this sytem on one of their geotechnical drill vessel in the South-Chinese sea.   This is the second Chinese order in a short while, after the delivery of a land survey vehicle. A.P. van den Berg exports the majority of its products world-wide. Oil companies are surveying existing oil and gas fields very intensively as the demand for fossil fuels is huge. They also are searching for new fields in deeper... (read more)

Offshore Survey Award

The organisers of Offshore Survey 2007 Conference, held in Southampton in March 2007, have announced the award for best presentation. Delegates were asked to vote for the winner, having received conference proceedings on CD. He is David Whitcombe of Shell, whose paper focused on improving recruitment, training and retention of personnel in the offshore survey industry.   As a result of the presentation, a working group has now been formed by representatives across the industry to address this issue. The prize - a brass and leather bound telescope - was awarded on the basis of votes cast by the delegates at... (read more)

Deep Offshore Metrology Tool

Spool and jumper metrologies constitute a critical path in the subsea pipe installation process. They can often occupy large construction vessels ‘just’ for survey operations that may last more than a full day, requiring several types of sensors (long baseline, gyros, depth sensors, etc.), as well as highly qualified surveyors. Moreover, measurement error may lead to spool misfit that has a dramatic impact on the overall project schedule. A newly designed metrology system, which may be seen as an acoustic taut wire, has now reached maturity and has been extensively used in 2006/2007 for different spool and jumper metrology projects,... Measurement Contract Offshore Norway

Metocean Services International (MSI) has been awarded a one-year current measurement programme for nine locations in the far north of Norway (their 2nd long-term contract to be awarded in Norway within a year). The Norwegian Oil Industry Association (OLF) has initiated this study to increase their understanding and knowledge on metocean data in the Lofoten - Vesterålen area in Nordland county.     The observations will also be given to support the Mareano programme. Some rigs with current profilers are already in place in the area and OLF is extending the current programmes with additional moorings.   For this programme... (read more)

SeeTrack Offshore Unit Sales

Subsea 7 is to receive two new Hercules Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), currently being manufactured by SMD, fitted with SeeByte's Dynamic Positioning system; SeeTrack Offshore. The vehicles will add to the leading contractors' existing fleet of ROVs which provide services to the Subsea Umbilical, Riser and Flowline (SURF) sector.   SeeTrack Offshore adds additional automation to the ROV control process by providing the ability for the ROV to automatically maintain a fixed position above the seabed or follow a programmed course and speed. The system runs on the surface and is contained in a 19 inch rack. With SeeTrack Offshore... (read more)

Offshore Cote D’Ivoire Repairs

HydroDive and it’s Alliance partners have just completed repairs in 235 ft. water offshore Cote D’Ivoire, carried out with the combination of Saturation diving techniques and a ‘Phoenix’ work-class ROV supporting operations from the DP II vessel ADAMS Surveyor. Although the ADAMS Surveyor has performed on various Diving and ROV Support Projects since the Alliance’s inception early this year, this is the first project where both the Phoenix ROV and HydroDive in Saturation have been in support. The Alliance has dedicated this spread to the West African market by permanently locating and operating from Nigeria. This allows it to be... (read more)
