Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee (VLIZ) is issuing a call for abstracts leading to presentations on the VLIZ Marine Science Day, taking place on 3 March 2017 in Bruges, Belgium. Final deadline for submission is 15 January 2017. CEDA’s Iberian Conference 2016
At the end of October 2016, the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) co-hosted a conference with the Portuguese Engineers Association (OE) in Lisbon, Portugal. The CEDA Iberian Conference: Dredging for Sustainable Port Development attracted over 120 participants and addressed key topics relevant to the success of port dredging and sediment management projects, with a focus on the Iberian Peninsula. Lighthouse Involved in ISG Programme for Lebanon

Lighthouse, a supplier of equipment for the Italian Navy, is involved in the International Support Group (ISG) programme for Lebanon. ISG is aimed at coordinating and developing training activities to enhance the growth of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) through donations of equipment and qualified training courses. Within the programme, last Thursday Italy presented the Lebanese Navy with a vessel specially equipped for conducting hydrographic surveys, at a ceremony held in the Beirut naval base. With sea level rise and increases in the severity of extreme natural events, there has been a renewed push to further our understanding of the coastal zone. Fundamental to understanding risk in areas of high vulnerability is capturing the near-shore land and sea surface. A Floating Tidal Energy Platform Prototype
Traditional solutions for generating electricity from the tides, where tidal turbines are installed on the seabed, require high-end offshore installation vessels and do not allow for easy access for maintenance. The BlueTEC floating tidal energy platform has a different approach. It is a permanently moored platform which generates renewable electricity from tidal currents by holding a tidal turbine underneath. University of Haifa Orders Leopard ROV

Israel’s University of Haifa has ordered a Saab Seaeye Leopard ROV.The Leopard will be a key resource for a new deep-sea research centre, which opened recently. The ROV will serve the entire marine research community in Israel through the national consortium of universities, colleges and government research institutes called the ‘Mediterranean-Sea Research Center of Israel’ (MERCI).
