Innovative Solutions and Proactive Approaches

CEDA’s Iberian Conference 2016
At the end of October 2016, the Central Dredging Association (CEDA) co-hosted a conference with the Portuguese Engineers Association (OE) in Lisbon, Portugal. The CEDA Iberian Conference: Dredging for Sustainable Port Development attracted over 120 participants and addressed key topics relevant to the success of port dredging and sediment management projects, with a focus on the Iberian Peninsula. On behalf of the co-organiser, Mr Carlos Loureiro, OE vice-president, stressed that the shared objectives, of the creation and dissemination of high-quality knowledge, made CEDA and OE ‘natural’ partners in presenting the event. Comprehensive Programme The conference started with a short introduction... (read more)

Kongsberg EM2040 Dual Head on Stril Explorer

A new Kongsberg EM2040D has been installed on MMT’s long-term charted multipurpose support vessel Stril Explorer. The device has a 0.4 x 0.7 degree dual-head multibeam system and it combines all of the features of deepwater echosounders for the shallow-water or ROV/AUV environment. Such features include: Dual swath per ping to maintain a high survey speed at maintained resolution. FM chirp to achieve a much longer range capability Complete roll, pitch and yaw stabilisation Near-field focusing both when transmitting and receiving By owning and operating an EM2040 dual head on Stril Explorer, MMT is further prepared to perform surveys that... Century Subsea Invests in New Technologies for Subsea Construction

Century Subsea is welcoming the delivery of its first, with an option for a second, Kongsberg Maritime Subsea HAIN, (Hydroacoustic Aided Inertial Navigation), prior to the commencement of a 90 day project in the Gulf of Mexico, for a major oil company. Subsea HAIN, developed from the HUGIN AUV navigation system, has now been used in several deepwater projects to enable increased accuracy of underwater positioning with minimal subsea hardware thus significantly reducing subsea construction costs. Additionally, Century Subsea has also purchased a new generation HiPAP 350P (Portable) USBL System. The HiPAP 350P has the pitch and roll sensor mounted... (read more)

Record OCTANS Month in USA

IXSEA Inc. received orders for a total of 23 OCTANS AHRS over the past month. This brings to over 70 units sold in the USA in 2008.   Launched in 1998, OCTANS became the first survey-grade fully integrated gyrocompass to meet IMO (International Maritime Organisation) standards in 2001. It is based on IXSEA's truly solid-state Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) technology.   The OCTANS gyrocompass and complete motion sensor, based on FOG technology, outputs true heading, roll, pitch, surge, sway, heave, speed, acceleration and rate of turn and settles at sea in less than three minutes. In 2006, IXSEA launched the... (read more)

GL Certification for Tidal Energy Converter Prototype

Germanischer Lloyd (GL) Renewables Certification (GL RC, Germany) is to certify Kawasaki Heavy Industries' (KHI) tidal energy converter prototype. The certification will be carried out according to GL RC's Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters and other relevant GL RC rules and guidelines for marine and offshore structures. KHI's tidal energy converter is currently under development at KHI's Akashi facility and will soon be installed at the European Marine Energy Test Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland/UK. The prototype certification by GL Renewables Certification will include assessment of the prototype design which demonstrates the fulfilment of the requirements in... (read more)

Logging Compass

AOSI's newest EZ-Compass-3AL Logging Compass incorporates a three-axis magnetometer with tilt and temperature compensation and a high capacity integrated logger that allows independent storage of up to 20,000 measurements, which are easily transferable to any PC. The 1.5" x 2.0"x 0.5" module weights about 11gr and outputs heading, pitch, roll, magnetic field and temperature over RS232 and RS422/RS485 ports by using all solid state components.   Compass measures tilt angles up to +-90 arcdeg (+-180 optional) and includes tilt linearization, hard and soft iron calibrations. EZ-Compass-3AVL is a vertical version and EZ-Compass-3AHL is the horizontal version. Both versions fit 0.9"... (read more)

Octans Proves Successful

IXSEA has announced the successful use of OCTANS, an IMO certified survey grade gyrocompass and complete motion sensor, onboard Kockums' new SAM3 minesweeping system.     SAM 3 is the most modern and recent development in the field of remote-controlled influence minesweeping. SAM 3 is robust, resistant to underwater explosions and equipped with magnetic, acoustic and electric devices that can generate ship-like signatures.   Kockums conducted successful trials earlier this year with the Dutch, Swedish and Finnish navies, which involved track-keeping in the area outside the naval base in Den Helder, the Netherlands. The area is quite challenging due to... (read more)
