Australia Tests Improved National Positioning

According to Geoscience Australia, technology companies GMV, Inmarsat and Lockheed Martin have joined Australia's two-year national positioning project. The project is trialling a Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) to improve the accuracy of Australia's positioning. The testing of SBAS technology in Australia offers a number of potential safety, productivity, efficiency and environmental benefits to many local industries, including transport, agriculture, construction and resources. The SBAS test-bed is Australia's first exploratory step to joining countries such as the United States, Europe, China, Russia, India and Japan, which are already using the technology on a daily basis. Research has shown that the... (read more)

USBL for Tidal Energy Positioning

One of the latest renewable energy sources currently being investigated for future large scale commercial deployment is tidal energy that exploits the natural ebb and flow of coastal tidal waters. As with other energy sources offshore, innovations to harness tidal forces often throw up additional operational difficulties particularly to do with positioning of the devices on the ocean floor and their connections to shore. Triscom have recently added the latest USBL positioning system, the Applied Acoustics' Easytrak Nexus, to its equipment pool to meet the increasing requirement for accurate underwater positioning tasks. Triscom is experienced in hydrographic/seabed survey and is... (read more)

TerraStar Positioning for Dredging Operations

DEME, Belgium, has commissioned TerraStar GNSS’s TerraStar-D Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service to support the worldwide near-shore operations of its multifunctional fleet of dredgers and auxiliary vessels. Operating in conjunction with Septentrio AsteRx2eL GNSS positioning and AsteRx2eH heading receivers, the TerraStar-D service will provide DEME’s vessel fleet with seamless high-precision decimetre-level accuracies using a combination of GPS and Glonass satellites to ensure faster levels of convergence and high update rates in the most demanding environments. Selection of the specialist service follows extensive trials under the auspices of DEME’s Survey Department during which recurring real-time accuracies were also shown to be... (read more)

Major Savings Through Acoustic Positioning

CSA International Inc, an environmental survey company working in the Gulf of Mexico, has become the first organisation in the world to purchase a new ‘calibration-free' acoustic positioning system launched by Sonardyne International Ltd. The GyroUSBL (see image) integrates Sonardyne's Lodestar Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) and sixth generation (6G) Ultra-Short BaseLine (USBL) transceiver into a single unit and was shown to offer operational benefits during a deepwater ROV survey carried out earlier this summer.   Most USBL positioning systems need to undergo a calibration process to determine the precise alignment offsets between the acoustic transceiver and the vessel's...
