GLONASS, GPS and GALILEO Present and Future Aspects

Global Navigation and Hydrography is the theme of this issue. GALILEO has received a ‘green light’, GPS has planned some important improvements and GLONASS has entered on a significant development programme. Time for HI to ask experts involved in each GNSS for their opinion on certain topics and finally to put the question: ‘What is in it all for us surveyors?’ The experts interviewed are: Dr Vidal Ashkenazi (GALILEO), Dr Keith McDonald (GPS) and Dr Boris Shebshaevich (GLONASS). We all know what is the oldest profession in the world. The second oldest is probably that of land surveyor: Adam undoubtedly wanted to stake out the boundaries of paradise in order to know what was and was not his. Paradise, or the Garden of Eden, was to be found in the land of the Euphrates and Tigris, where these two rivers converge at the town of Qurna in the present Shatt al Arab. NOAA is one of the bigger organisations in the world that has surveying and charting in its portfolio. It’s an immense task as the USA has about 95,000 miles of coastline, important ports and a wide range of users – from recreational boaters to the biggest container vessels and tankers. The country also has to deal with environmental disasters like hurricanes and oil spills. NOAA is undergoing changes as the chart portfolio is ‘going digital’ and new initiatives such as using Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS) for surveys. Meet the Hydro International Team at Oceanology International (G-P)

In the third week of March, the entire marine world will be gathering in London, as this is where the biannual Oceanology International event is taking place. The exhibition and the conference bring together technological and scientific developments. With over 550 exhibitors and a state of the art conference programme OI12 is definitely the place to be. From the quality perspective, an electronic navigational chart (ENC) as a product is more demanding than its paper predecessor. Quality control and quality assurance of an ENC is a complex matter. The task of ensuring ENC quality during practical chart production is much broader than the direct implementation of standards. Bio-inspired Underwater Robotics

Swimming, Swarming and Sensing
For operations in complex underwater environments, bio-inspired robots offer manoeuvrability, stealth and autonomy. They integrate propulsion and control systems into one multi-purpose undulatory propeller. By generating large counteracting forces, undulating fins generate a wide range of net torques and accelerations. Bio-inspired designs can provide stealth by imitating the motion patterns of organisms. Bio-inspiration provides strategies to integrate multimodal sensory information, and algorithms on how to form robot swarms. Multimodal sensing and swarming facilitate navigation during indeterminate tasks, such as surveying or maintenance, provide robot redundancy, and increase the temporal and spatial resolution of a mission. Satellite Positioning

Within the last twenty years Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers have revolutionised navigation. Integrated devices are capable of providing time, position, height, direction, heave and attitude to accuracies of a few nanoseconds time, 1cm position or 0.01 degree heading. All potentially displayed on a digital chart background with radar and auto-identification system overlays.
