Satellite Positioning

Within the last twenty years Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers have revolutionised navigation. Integrated devices are capable of providing time, position, height, direction, heave and attitude to accuracies of a few nanoseconds time, 1cm position or 0.01 degree heading. All potentially displayed on a digital chart background with radar and auto-identification system overlays. In this first of two articles we look at current Satellite Positioning systems, how they work and how we can make them better. In this feature the current status and future development of four Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are briefly presented. These four systems are the American Global Positioning System (GPS), the Russian Glonass, the European Galileo and the Chinese BeiDou Compass. All four systems offer, or will offer, civil navigation services (publicly open), as well as restricted access navigation services, which means for GPS, Glonass and most likely for Compass as well, military services. The challenges facing the contractor
Hydrographic Offices (HOs) all over the world are going digital in their production environment. New shipboard equipment and improved display techniques embrace all the latest technologies in the interests of ensuring the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). HOs increasingly seek to produce and distribute ENCs to standards specified in IHO Special Publication S57 (edition 3.1). The production and validation of ENC datasets to achieve these stringent quality requirements are outlined here. East Australia Region Commander (CMDR) John Maschke of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and chair of the East Australia Region of the Australasian Hydrographic Society was recently elected to the position of fellow within the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI). John has had a long and varied career in the RAN, predominantly within the Australian Hydrographic Service. After receiving his education in Sydney, he briefly entered the Australian Public Service in 1973 before joining the RAN on 2nd April 1974. A World First for Hydrographic Surveying Certification

The Australasian Hydrographic Surveyors Certification Panel (AHSCP) is the first national/regional competency certification scheme to be internationally recognised. On 24 May 2012, at its annual meeting held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the FIG/IHO/ICA International Board for Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers (IBSC) awarded recognition to the AHSCP Certification Scheme. An increasing number of ships are venturing into areas where the only hydrographic data available do not meet the standard many of these vessels require for safe navigation. A number of recent and some not so recent marine casualties have resulted from encounters with uncharted, isolated seabed features (Russell, 2014).
