Multibeam Data Processing

Using CUBE Surfaces for Nautical Cartography and Dredged Measurements
This article is about the evolution of acoustic sounders imposed on Hydrographic Service’s new methodologies for the interpretation, handling and application of hydrographic information. Considering spatial resolution and high-density data acquired by multibeam echosounders (MBES), algorithms such as Combined Uncertainty Bathymetry Estimator (CUBE) are used in the processing workflow to generate depths and uncertainty estimates. Can bathymetric surfaces be considered the final survey product in exchange of the traditional shoals selection? IHPT conducted hydrographic surveys in order to evaluate CUBE processing for nautical cartography and for dredged volume calculation. Shoals validated by hydrographers were compared with CUBE estimated depths and... (read more)

Preparation, performance and processing

Aqua Vision BV
With a background in oceanography, physical geography and electronic engineering, Aqua Vision BV, a small company with its headquarters in Utrecht (the Netherlands), is an all-round player in the fields of hydrography and oceanography. Since its foundation in 1995, the company has grown to become an internationally operating company with customers throughout the world. Among its customers are governmental agencies, research institutes and harbour authorities. Aqua Vision was founded in 1995 by Peter Meijer and Sicco Kamminga to focus on current measurements using acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs). In 1996, it became a limited liability company managed and owned by... (read more)

Survey Processing Software for Italy

The Italian Hydrographic Institute (IIM) has selected CARIS HIPS and SIPS software for its hydrographic survey processing. IIM will now have access to the latest technologies as they become available. Among these will be the implementation in HIPS of a new framework from CARIS designed to handle very large volumes of multi-dimensional data called CSAR.   Likewise, IIM will have access to integration of Geocoder in HIPS and SIPS for processing multi-beam backscatter, which will enable users to produce better quality mosaics than ever before.   The Institute has been the official nautical charting agency of the Italian Navy since... High-resolution Side-scan Processing

Chesapeake Technology has presented a high-resolution capability for SonarWiz 5 that doubles the resolution of the earlier version. The result for side-scan sonar data is crisper, sharper mosaics, waterfalls and sonar contact images. Christian Mueller, Humminbird’s SAR side-scan operator, said that on a recent search he was able to narrow down almost 70 targets in the survey area to just five, with the first one being a hit.     Surveyors in all types of industries can use high resolution to resolve smaller features and see finer detail to improve productivity, security and safety. For example, Navy Route Surveys can... (read more)

Magellan BLADE GNSS Signal Processing

Magellan has announced its exclusive BLADE (Base Line Accurate Determination Engine) technology, a GNSS processing solution that facilitates centimeter-level accuracy for real-time and post-processing surveys and mapping operations. Magellan’s BLADE combines ranging and carrier phase data from two satellite systems, GPS and SBAS, for superior satellite coverage and signal reliability to enable rapid, centimeter-level solutions. Magellan’s BLADE is the first GNSS processing system that uses SBAS ranging and carrier phase measurements in the RTK data processing. These SBAS measurements, which are GPS-like, improve satellite geometry to allow centimeter-level accuracies to be achieved in a shorter time compared to GPS-only algorithms.... (read more)

New Post-Processing MobileMapper 6

Magellan has introduced a post-processing option and new feature to its low cost handheld GIS/GPS receiver - MobileMapper 6. The raw data collection capability enabling post-processing, is included as an option in the new version of the Mobile Mapping field software for MobileMapper 6. Current users of MobileMapper 6 can order the post-processing option (activation code) and upgrade their units, via a simple and free firmware upgrade. The new Mobile Mapping application also complement the MobileMapper 6 offer with value features such as 3D shape files support, e-compass input for direction measurements,  voice tags as attribute, image geo-referencing in the... Survey Engine Processing Licences Investment

Osiris Projects has purchased ten new Survey Engine software processing licenses from Coda Octopus. This investment in the Survey Engine family of geophysical processing software includes nine purchases of the new Mosaic+ professional side-scan mosaicking package which is being launched at OI14. This investment takes Osiris Projects to twenty processing licenses and, combined with a fleet of five CodaOctopus DA4G sonar data acquisition systems and a further five digital acquisition software licenses, provides an extremely capable geophysical survey provision. Robert White, Principal Geophysicist at Osiris Projects, said the company has been working with Coda Octopus for over 10 years and... (read more)

Post-processing Solutions at Northeast Lidar Workshop

Blue Marble Geographics' Director of Product Management, Sam Knight, gave presentations at NOAA’s Northeast Regional Ocean Council’s Northeast Lidar & Sea Level Rise Impacts Workshop on 10 and 11 July 2012 in Portland, USA. Knight focuses on post-processing of Lidar data with the Blue Marble Desktop and Global Mapper. The talk demonstrates the latest Lidar post-processing tools for coping with these challenges in the software. Both tools have powerful features for preparing data and analysing it, whether it be in transforming the elevations between geoid models, processing the high volumes of point cloud data into manageable chunks, or deriving terrain... Advancements in Area-based Imagery Processing

An Integrated Geocoder Delivers a Streamlined Workflow and New Capabilities
For many years the focus has been on collecting and processing the first bottom return of multibeam sonars. However, the acoustic backscatter acquired by multibeam sonars, as well as sidescan sonars, also carries important information about the sea floor and its physical properties. One necessary step towards this characterisation is the creation of more consistent and reliable mosaics of acoustic backscatter. To create the final backscatter map, it is necessary to carry out certain corrections on the backscatter. Following last month's interview with CARIS founder Dr Masry, here we focus on a tool that has been introduced for this purpose:... (read more)
