For many years the focus has been on collecting and processing the first bottom return of multibeam sonars. However, the acoustic backscatter acquired by multibeam sonars, as well as sidescan sonars, also carries important information about the sea floor and its physical properties. One necessary step towards this characterisation is the creation of more consistent and reliable mosaics of acoustic backscatter. To create the final backscatter map, it is necessary to carry out certain corrections on the backscatter. Advanced Wave Processing for Port-Log

OceanWise has recently added an advanced wave processing algorithm to its online environmental data sharing and publishing system, Port-Log. The algorithm has been developed by a market leading provider of waves processing software to the oil and gas industry. According to OceanWise’s MD, Dr Mike Osborne, this new capability allows users to browse and view wave parameters, such as directional spectra, and partitioned time series, in real-time or historically, alongside other environmental datasets contained within the Port-Log system. 3D Onboard Processing Project Completed

  Wavefield and its partner Geotrace have just completed one of the largest 3D onboard processing projects for Marathon in the Makassar Straits, Offshore Indonesia.

The 3,000sqkm project was processed entirely on the vessel using a large compute facility, and delivered to the client 10 days after the final shotpoint. The processing sequence included state of the art processing techniques such as sophisticated noise attenuation techniques, surface related multiple attenuation and radon demultiple.   The rapid delivery of a high quality 3D migrated volume will allow Marathon to make a timely start on their interpretation effort.     (read more)

Kongsberg Mesotech, Canada, has announced the latest version of MS 1000 software for MS 1071 and MS 1171 Digital Scanning Sonar. MS 1000 Version 5.0 marks a major change in direction for this software. It enables no-charge software updates for all users and more specialised and productive software tools for specific user groups. The entry-level software, known as MS 1000 Express Edition, provides basic operating functions for Kongsberg Mesotech digital sonar. The dedicated QuickStitch software package has been designed specifically for data collected with a Teledyne BlueView 3D Scanning Sonar to streamline the review, cleaning and alignment process. Developed by EIVA from the NaviModel solution, which is part of the NaviSuite software suite, QuickStitch is based on industry-proven hydrographic software. Automatic Hydroacoustic Data Processing for Fisheries

BioSonics, USA, has released VisAcq AutoTrack, a software module for researchers who use hydroacoustics for stock assessment of fisheries. VisAcq AutoTrack calculates the sampled volume and fish density by depth strata. At the conclusion of a mobile hydroacoustic survey, data processing is essentially completed and the user need only export track lists to a CSV file.
