Hands-off ENC Production

Redefining High-density ENC Production
Imagine piloting a 398m container ship into port TODAY using an ENC updated with survey data collected YESTERDAY. Isn’t this order of turnaround time the ultimate dream of any ENC production agency? Modern echo sounders are able to provide a staggering amount of sounding data. Managing, and storing, the ever increasing volume of survey data is becoming a hot item on the agenda of many ENC producing agencies, including port and river authorities who have taken on the responsibility of creating and maintaining their own ENCs. Processing this data into high-quality, high-density ENCs requires a powerful, flexible and easy-to-use ENC... (read more)

Integrated Database Production Environment

New Data Management Technology at CHS
Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) recognises the need to improve its processes for data management and product creation to meet the high standards expected by the hydrographic community. From a task rationalisation perspective, CHS needs to reduce production steps, data manipulation and associated errors, and time spent on production process checks. The adoption of database-driven technology was identified to be the key to answering these expectations. CHS has chosen the latest tools developed by Caris to help reach the goal of improving processes for the management of data (points, lines and bathymetry) while maintaining its mission of producing legal nautical documents... Inland ENC Production

European Union
ECDIS has been standardised by the IHO in Special Publications No. 57 (S57) and No. 52 (S52) and is established in coastal and open sea areas. The S57 standard covers the data model of the chart, whereas S52 defines its presentation. These standards are well approved and thus changes and extensions must be handled carefully. Nevertheless, European hydrographic offices faced the need for adaptations since traffic signs and traffic regulations differ on inland waterways. As a consequence, European experts developed the Inland ECDIS standard as an amendment to the maritime standard. The problem has thus been solved by supplements, strictly... (read more)

Ageotec Expands Production Capacity

As the result of growing business opportunities and ROVs success worldwide, Ageotec is to expand its production capacity through enlarging its existing production and laboratory areas in plant in Como (Italy). The new area will mostly be dedicated to the increased and renovated electronic laboratory which has been fitted out to the highest specifications and standards.   This will help improve technological innovation as well as efficiency of the production process since all mechanical and electronic technology is entirely developed inside the company. The entire facility include warehouse, R&D area, electronic laboratory, production and mechanical laboratory for assembling and custimisationprocess... (read more)

Mariscope Meerestechnik Expands Production Facility

Mariscope has moved to a new facility in the town of Gettorf (near Kiel), Germany. Mariscope Meerestechnik has been involved in ROV and marine technology manufacturing for 22 years and is still owned by its original founder, Christian Haag. Mariscope is specialised in customised designs, special developments and prototypes. ROVs are manufactured in stainless steel materials, frames are hand welded and the units are known for their robustness. Mariscope’s systems are completely developed and built in Germany, and the new facilities give the company the possibility to keep up with the increasing demand in their products. All areas of the... Streamlined Gyro Compass Production Process

New manufacturing techniques and streamlined product design are enabling Teledyne TSS to deliver new gyro compasses in less than six weeks. High demand combined with the complexity and precision manufacture of TSS and S G Brown gyrocompasses had traditionally required delivery lead times of several months. The transformation has been achieved through a combination of factors arising from the application of modern manufacturing techniques. These include the use of improved materials management and just-in-time delivery to ensure that components are available when required but without the accumulation of expensive stock. Changes have also been made to designs of the gyros... (read more)

Database Production for Polish Navy

The Hydrographic Office of the Polish Navy (HOPN) is making the move to a database-driven production solution with CARIS HPD. HPD will enable HOPN to update product-specific features and make customisations while maintaining the source data, providing efficiencies and ensuring improved standards of consistency. HOPN has in recent years gained experience with CARIS' database solutions when implementing CARIS Bathy DataBASE for the management of their bathymetric data. A series of visits by CARIS consultants will take place over the first quarter of the year for training and consulting to aid in implementing HPD fully into the HOPN chart production workflow.... Latest Version DNC Production System

CARIS has released version 3.2 of CARIS DOM (DIGEST Object Manager) for DNC (Digital Nautical Chart) production. CARIS DOM software is used for the production of DNC and Vmap1 (Vector Smart Map) nautical charts and also supports production of NATO Additional Military Layer (AML) products in VPF (Vector Product Format) format. The new version includes new tools, as well as modifications to existing tools engineered to bring efficiencies in production, with specific attention to the data validation and error correction processes. The Digital Nautical Chart is produced by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) and is an unclassified, vector-based... (read more)

Quality ENC Production for HOs

The challenges facing the contractor
Hydrographic Offices (HOs) all over the world are going digital in their production environment. New shipboard equipment and improved display techniques embrace all the latest technologies in the interests of ensuring the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). HOs increasingly seek to produce and distribute ENCs to standards specified in IHO Special Publication S57 (edition 3.1). The production and validation of ENC datasets to achieve these stringent quality requirements are outlined here. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has amended SOLAS articles relating to carriage requirements for the use of ECDIS in certain types of vessels. When production is outsourced manufacturers... (read more)

Polar Duchess in Steady Production

The Norwegian seismic survey company Dolphin Geophysical has recently christened a new high-capacity 3D vessel, Polar Duchess. She entered into steady production for TGS in the Barents Sea on 14 April 2012. The six-month contract was announced previously. The vessel is chartered on an initial 3-year time-charter from Armada Seismic from 6 April 2012, and Dolphin has the option of further extending the charter with an additional 8 years. The second large 3D vessel, Polar Duke, is expected to complete Dolphin Geo’s first 3D multi-client project in Senegal during the first half of May. The vessel will then be relocated... (read more)
