Accreditation Allows 'Tsunami' to Make Waves

When Andrews considered a new coastal hydrographic vessel, a smaller RIB best suited their customers’ survey needs, but would it meet the strict requirements for MCA Accreditation? Roy Jarman, Andrews Survey, and Ed Cookson discuss the modifications Andrews had to put in place. Andrews Survey, in Great Yarmouth, carries out a wide range of hydrographic, geophysical and geo-technical projects. These range from cable & pipeline landfalls harbour investigations, the charting of coastal erosion and beach profiles, pre and post-dredge surveys, windfarm SIs and resource mapping. When Andrews considered a new hydrographic work-boat therefore they sought to offer as wide a... (read more)

Seabed Investigation on Wylfa Newydd Nuclear Power Station Site

Fugro has commenced marine site characterisation works for Horizon Nuclear Power at the proposed Wylfa Newydd power station site on the Isle of Anglesey, UK. The detailed works are carried out during July and August and will assist Horizon to gain a better understanding of the geological conditions offshore the proposed site. Two jack-up barges from Fugro’s fleet have been mobilised to conduct high quality geotechnical drilling and sampling operations on 36 borehole locations, in varying water depths. Taking place around 500 metres out to sea at Porth-y-Pistyll, and more than 800 metres from the Cemlyn Bay nature reserve, the... (read more)

The MRU and SRF Aligned (I)

With increasing accuracies of positioning and multi-beam systems, alignment of the motion reference unit (MRU) is becoming increasingly important. Although most (if not all) multi-beam surveyors use the patch-test to resolve the angular offsets between the multi-beam head and the MRU, this test does not give us the angular offsets between the MRU and the ship’s reference frame (SRF). In addition to this, any misalignment between the vertical rotation axis of the MRU and the SRF (yaw-angle) will introduce cross-talk between pitch and roll.<P> The alignment of the threeaxes is also becoming increasingly important at shallower depths as we should... Moroccan Gendarmerie Picks Falcon for Emergencies

For their search, rescue and recovery operations The Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie has chosen a Saab Seaeye Falcon ROV. They choose the Falcon as a small, yet powerful resource for rapid deployment from a small boat or RIB and which can accommodate an array of search and recovery systems. The Falcon will be deployed along Morocco’s 2,000km coastline and in the country’s many inland lakes. The Gendarmerie liked that in strong currents the Falcon can manoeuver with precision and remain steady on task, whilst also fitted with a variety of tooling, cameras and sonar equipment.
