Ocean Observatories for Seabed Research

CAGE (Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate) has selected Kongsberg Maritime to develop and deliver two ocean observatories. The observatories will be deployed off the coast of Svalbard (Norwegian islands in the Arctic Ocean) during 2015, to monitor methane leaks from the seabed. INIS Hydro Seabed Mapping Project

Seabed 2030 Needs Your Data

On 20 February this year, the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project became operational. Its task: to finish mapping the 84% of our oceans still unmapped. Simultaneously an 18-page concept paper was published laying out the morphological statistics, technological realities and data assembly structure that can ensure success. Bathymetric input from HOs is urgently requested. In the two years since F-FOFM basically formulated Seabed 2030, amazing progress has been made. Companies like Fugro are making swath mapping transit tracks through unmapped areas available (viz. Seabed Characterisation Jack-Up Rigs

A.P. van den Berg and Keppel FELS are collaborating to enhance the safety of jack-up rig installations by integrating probes into jack-up rig legs designed to characterise seabed properties prior to installations.   To assure availability of geotechnical information and to minimise uncertainties and risks associated with jack-up installations, seabed-probing equipment developed by A.P. van den Berg will be integrated into jack-up rigs. Autonomous Seabed Monitoring System Deployed

A long-life acoustic monitoring system developed by Sonardyne International Ltd, UK, to detect minute changes in the seafloor due to settlement has been successfully deployed in Southeast Asia for Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP). Installed in 45 metres of water, the network of Autonomous Monitoring Transponders (AMTs) that make up the system were supplied with compact subsea instrument housings and anti-trawl seabed frames that have been custom-designed by Sonardyne to provide protection from commercial fishing activities in the area. Integrated Mapping of Seabed Features

The Italian Navy, using survey vessel Ammiraglio Magnaghi and personnel from the “Istituto Idrografico della Marina” (IIM), in cooperation with ENEA Marine Environment Research Centre, surveyed the Levante Canyon system, located in the offshore area of “Cinque Terre”, eastern Ligurian Sea, NW Mediterranean. Seabed Characterisation Using Wind Noise

The acoustic reflection coefficient of the seabed can be measured from the wind-generated noise of the ocean using a vertical line array of hydrophones suspended in mid-water. Results of experiments at several sites have previously been published and an example is presented here. The effect of the seabed on acoustic propagation from a source to receptor is illustrated by means of a simple formula.<P> The formula predicts thatfor a highly reflective seabed the received acoustic power at moderate ranges could be at least four times that received from a single direct path, and higher still at long ranges.
