AUV-based 3D Chirp Sub-bottom Profiling

Offshore Diamond Mining Applications
During the 1990s De Beers Marine identified a major business opportunity in radically improving its geological modelling capability. It set up a project to deliver the necessary geophysical systems and the team soon saw potential in integrating the company’s future development ideas for Chirp sub-bottom profiling sonar and sediment characterisation with the stability and accuracy of AUVs. The result was an ultra-high-resolution, 3D-volume imaging sub-bottom profiling system capable of low-cost, large-scale, deep-water (600m) mapping from a low-specification survey support vessel. Since 2001 De Beers Marine (DBM) has been routinely operating an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) as its principle, ultra-high-resolution geosurvey... (read more)

Combined Tri-frequency Sidescan Sonar, Sub-bottom Profiling and Bathymetry System

EdgeTech has announced the release of a new towed sonar system providing tri-frequency sidescan sonar, enhanced sub-bottom profiling and MPES bathymetry: the 2300 system. The unit combines EdgeTech’s line of sidescan sonar, sub-bottom profilers and MPES bathymetry into one fully integrated system. The 2300 system has been developed for deep-water combined sonar operations and provides many enhancements to traditional systems. Utilising EdgeTech’s proven Full Spectrum CHIRP technology to provide crisp, high-resolution imagery, surveyors can choose to operate any two frequencies simultaneously from the versatile tri-frequency system. Sub-bottom profiler capabilities have been expanded on the 2300 and includes the ability to... (read more)

Two ParaSound P70 Sub-bottom Profilers for Chinese Research Institutes

Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS) and Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology (QIMG) have awarded Teledyne RESON contracts to supply a full ocean depth sub-bottom profiler system for their new-build survey vessels. Both research institutions belong to China Geological Survey and work in the field of marine resources and geology. GMGS is one of the most experienced users of Teledyne RESON deep water sonar in East Asia. Its R/V Hai Yang 4 is equipped with a HydroSweep MD/30 deep water multibeam echosounder, and installation of a ParaSound full ocean depth sub-bottom profiler will be finished after the Chinese New Year celebrations.... ROV Inspects Russian Sunken Sub

On Halloween day in 1965, the Russian submarine K-77 was commissioned and assigned to the Soviet Northern Fleet. She was a Juliett class sub manned by 28 officers and 54 crewmen. Despite her small size, 282 feet long and just under 3,200 tons, the US Navy considered her a formidable adversary. The sub was armed with four nuclear cruise missiles and 22 torpedoes. Her stealth came from a tiled rubber exterior and silent running diesel electric motors which propelled her at a submerged speed of 18 knots. She could remain under water for 800 hours and descend to a safe... (read more)
