Pipeline Survey with Acoustics

Directional Sub-bottom Profiler and Hydrophone Array
A method is presented which greatly increases the efficiency of pipeline survey using sediment echo sounder. These surveys are mostly done sailing cross courses; adding receiving directionality, a course can be sailed along the pipeline. This means 100% inspection of pipe coverage can be obtained in far less time than that required for cross-sailing survey. The receiving element is an array of sixteen hydrophones with optimal signal processing (Kalman filtering). The position and orientation of the transmitting transducer and receiving hydrophone array are also estimated, optimally using a Global Position System and a Motion Reference Unit. A sediment echo-sounder transducer... (read more)

ROV Inspects Russian Sunken Sub

On Halloween day in 1965, the Russian submarine K-77 was commissioned and assigned to the Soviet Northern Fleet. She was a Juliett class sub manned by 28 officers and 54 crewmen. Despite her small size, 282 feet long and just under 3,200 tons, the US Navy considered her a formidable adversary. The sub was armed with four nuclear cruise missiles and 22 torpedoes. Her stealth came from a tiled rubber exterior and silent running diesel electric motors which propelled her at a submerged speed of 18 knots. She could remain under water for 800 hours and descend to a safe... (read more)

Landsat Archive for Monitoring Coastline Changes

Based on some predictions, sea levels may rise by up to 1.5m by the year 2100. Such rises are likely to have severe effects on some coastal regions around the world, including many large cities. Regular monitoring of coastal areas contributes to understanding the current seasonal and long-term effects of changes. Professor John Trinder shares insights into how GNSS equipment, airborne Lidar and UAS-derived imagery have been used to demonstrate periodic changes in the coastline north of Sydney, Australia. For me, an advantage of working with civil engineers at the University of NSW, Australia, is being able to tap into the outcomes... (read more)
