Edgetech Sonar Training Seminar

EdgeTech, USA, will be holding its annual sonar training seminar in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA, from 24 to 26 September 2013. This course will cover sonar theory, operational training, system maintenance and post processing data for all of EdgeTech’s standard sidescan sonar, sub-bottom profiling and combined systems. The format for the 3-day seminar includes two days of classroom instruction and one day at sea. Topics and systems to be addressed include the following: • 4125 Side Scan Sonar Shallow water side scan sonar operations • 4200 Side Scan Sonar Offshore multifaceted side scan sonar solutions • 3100 Sub-bottom Profiler Sub-bottom... Lasts decades’ evolution in sub-bottom profiling

Most sub-bottom profilers of the 60s, 70s and 80s were only designed to generate cross-sectional images of seabed sediment layering and other sub-bottom features. The data were degraded by system limitations such as narrow bandwidth, nonlinear and un-calibrated electronics, low signal-to-noise ratio of filtered data, source ringing, poor pulse repeatability and poor temporal and spatial resolution.<P> Frequency Modulated pulses (taken from RF Radar Technology) addressed these limitations. A quantitative sub-bottom profiler was introduced in the mid 1990s so that the reflection seismogram has the wide dynamic range required for signal processing procedures in sediment classification methods. These procedures, which initially... (read more)

SubConn Acquires Cornerstone

SubConn recently purchased the assets of their main supplier of inner machined parts, Cornerstone. This acquisition has brought the entire manufacturing process of underwater connectors under one roof and will streamline production. Customers are to experience faster lead times and increased product support. Along with the machining capabilities, SubConn now has an additional 11,250 square feet of space and doubled its production capacity. With an increase in headcount of about 30%, they have gained a skilled engineering workforce and increased their engineering potential for new product development and customer support.Production space has expanded so that capacity can be rapidly increased... Hard Anodised Aluminium Connector

In response to the continued success of MacArtney's recent addition to the range of SubConn® connectors, the Hard Anodised SubConn Connector is now held as a stock item. Specially treated to resist cathodic de-bonding, the hard anodised aluminium is stronger than other non-conductive materials and can have a longer life. Since its introduction as a special order connector, the Hard Anodised SubConn connector has been a success with offshore, military and ocean science customers. In response to their continued popularity, the MacArtney Underwater Technology Group that supplies the connectors have now extended the range to include versions of almost every... (read more)

Next Generation SWIMMER

Statoil, FMC Kongsberg Subsea (FKS) and Cybernétix have joined forces to take the Swimmer concept one step further. The Swimmer is an AUV/ROV Hybrid for inspection, maintenance and repair activities in deepwater sub-sea fields. A three-party study is at present going on to define and cost the basic design of a Swimmer autonomous intervention system able to operate in accordance with Statoil functional requirements and fully compatible and integrated with future sub-sea field developments. The original Swimmer concept is based on using an AUV to transport a WorkClass ROV to sub-sea field and connect this to the production control umbilical... (read more)

C- Surveyor III Completes Noble Energy Project

C&C Technologies recently completed a survey for Noble Energy utilising its new C-Surveyor III AUV. The C-Surveyor III completed the 81NM survey in the Gulf of Mexico with water depths ranging from 4100 to 4700 feet. C&C’s new 4500-metre C-Surveyor III AUV includes a multibeam echosounder, chirp side scan sonar, chirp sub-bottom profiler and CTD system. The customised sub-bottom profiler on board is outfitted with narrow transmit and receive beams to permit significantly deeper seabed penetration.  In addition to the sub-bottom profiler, a customised Dynamically Focused (DF) sidescan sonar system provides five times more resolution than traditional systems used on other... L3 Klein CHIRP Sub-bottom Profiler

L-3 Klein has launched a CHIRP Sub Bottom Profiler (SBP) attachment for the 3000 Model Side-scan Sonar. The older SBP was a single transducer 3.5kHz "pinger" and delivered satisfactory performance for a lightweight SBP, but lacked penetration and resolution. The new SBP has a two transmit transducers and linear hydrophone Mills Cross configuration for optimum "sea bottom footprint", as well as a CHIRP transmit pulse.   Deliveries of the new K-CHIRP Model 3310 Sub Bottom Profiler are based on feedback from the demos; this SBP will raise the performance bar for Sub Bottom Profilers at a competitive price. Sub-bottom Profilers Delivered to SHOM

iXBlue, France, is providing ECHOES sub-bottom profilers and DELPH seabed mapping software to SHOM for shallow-water hydrographic applications. SHOM missions include ensuring safety of navigation, defence support and public policies such as cartographic reference. Sub-bottom profiling in shallow water has always proved challenging. First, the profilers are usually towed bodies that are difficult to use when survey lines are short, U-turns are frequent and water depth is limited. Additionally, commonly used small vessels limit the acceptable size of survey equipment. iXBlue ECHOES 3500T3 and 10000 models are selected as they are compact and purpose-fitted for pole-mounted and hull-mounted installations. Seeking... (read more)

ECA Project Leader ‘HALIODSTAR’

ECA is to develop the AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) ALISTAR 3000 for the ultra-deep operating offshore industry in the context of a programme called ‘HALIODSTAR’. The project is being carried out by members of the consortium called ‘HALIOD’, which gathers together experienced businesses, scientific institutions and specialised schools, all situated around the harbour of Brest, France’s research pole in marine science. The group itself was created in 2001, thanks to the initiative of Technopôle Brest Iroise. The development of federative programmes concentrating on technological themes applicable to the offshore environment is its top priority. The group focuses on themes such... (read more)
