UKHO Sets Benchmark Quality Charting

With mandation of ECDIS being brought in for new High Speed Craft next year and discussion on extension of the requirement to other classes of vessel, attention needs to be paid to the quality of charts used in these systems, according to the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO). Many charting organisations are promoting the fact that they work to ISO 9001:2000, the quality standard of the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Top Navy Chief Supports UKHO

The head of the Royal Navy visited the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) on Friday 7th December to get an update on the navigational services and charts the organisation provides. UKHO Expands Brazilian Chart Coverage

As Brazilian waters grow busier, many of Brazil’s port facilities are being modernised and expanded. The UKHO has produced new and updated charts and Port Approach Guides for Brazilian waters so that customers of ADMIRALTY Nautical Product & Services have access to the most up-to-date and accurate information. The upgraded Brazil portfolio will include 23 charts. Meridian Chartware Wins UKHO Contract

Meridian Chartware Limited was awarded a contract in 2003 by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) to design and develop in conjunction with both the UKHO and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) an electronic chart training package and a low cost entry electronic chart plotter. The Chart Plotter, was launched at the London Boat Show at Excel in January 2004 and is available for sale from mid March 2004. 25,000 copies of the training package will be distributed to all students on the RYA navigation course from September 2004. Laser-Scan Support for UKHO

Laser-Scan has signed a contract with the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), Ministry of Defence, for the support and maintenance of key operational production systems. The contract provides the UKHO with continued maintenance for two years to support chart production systems covering 3,300 charts. This includes both the Standard Navigational charts in paper form, and raster as the Admiralty Raster Chart Service (ARCS). UKHO Adds Chinese Coastal Data

UKHO has announced that Chinese ENCs will be released into Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS) from 30th April 2009. The new Chinese coverage will, for the first time, make it possible for world shipping to use ENCs when sailing from Hong Kong to the Chinese Mainland and navigate using a single official ENC service for complete passage on important intra-Asia trade routes.     In total 252 new Chinese ENCs are being released covering the thousands of square miles of Chinese coastal waters and all their major ports. UKHO Warns of Counterfeit Charts

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has issued a warning regarding counterfeit charts and other UKHO publications it has seen in circulation. The counterfeit documents do not satisfy SOLAS carriage requirements, and having counterfeit documents on board may lead to further legal complications in many countries where the carriage of counterfeit items is against the law. In addition, since the counterfeit charts and publications have not been subjected to thorough checks, they cannot be trusted to be used for navigational purposes and could potentially lead to navigation errors causing an incident.
