SurvTech Selects NEXUS 800 for Aerial Mapping

A NEXUS 800 UAS powered by HYPACK has been provided to the US southeastern geospatial solutions company SurvTech. The company will use the device to acquire upland data simultaneous with subaqueous data and make a seamless point cloud of upland and submerged data. The integration with the company’s heading RTK GPS, IMU, sonar and HYPACK was experienced as straightforward. President David O’Brien of SurvTech stated they have been collecting mobile LiDAR with the HYPACK solution from their boats and trucks and are extremely happy with the datasets. Choice of the NEXUS 800 UAS When planning to equip a UAV copter... (read more)

From Concept to Feasibility in Aerial Mapping

French Coastal Survey Using ALB
Starting in 2005, the French Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Office (Service hydrographique et océanographique de la marine [Shom]) and the French National Geographic Institute (Institut National de l’Information Géographique et Forestière [IGN]) began conducting, as part of the national project Litto3D, a series of coastal surveys of metropolitan France and some overseas territories. This article provides insight into the evolution of Shom's expertise in airborne Lidar bathymetry (ALB).  The coastal areas were poorly described in 2005; airborne bathymetric Lidar data was used to create a continuous altimetric dataset of the coastal zone. The purpose of this project was to produce better... (read more)

NOAA Awards Photo Science Five-Year Shoreline Mapping Contract

Photo Science was awarded a five-year IDC contract by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide aerial photography and photogrammetric mapping services to support of the nationwide Shoreline Mapping Program. Photo Science will assist NOAA in delineating approximately 95,000 miles of shoreline and provide an official and accurate delineation of the National Shoreline. This will be accomplished via stereo photogrammetry using tide-coordinated aerial photography controlled by kinematic GPS techniques. This process produces a seamless, digital database of the national shoreline and a database of aerial photography which will help establish the legal authority when determining the official shoreline... Lantmäteriet Purchases UltraCam Eagle

Lantmäteriet, the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority, has invested in an UltraCam Eagle 'ultra-large' format digital aerial camera system. It will be used to support Lantmäteriet’s national aerial photography programme. Lantmäteriet will also collect imagery of much of Sweden's coastline during 2012 to use in a review of Sweden's maritime borders. The programme collects approximately 33% of Sweden, 150,000 km2, each year at 0.5 metre GSD, and some localities and regions at 0.25 metre GSD. Mr. Bengt Kjellson, Lantmäteriet’s director general, said that recent technological developments in communication, visualisation and smart devices are making aerial photography increasingly important... Bluesky Adds to Flood Risk Modelling Software

The latest aerial photography and detailed earth surface models from Bluesky are being used for demonstration in a software package developed to assess the risk and impact of flooding. To support the launch of ISIS 2D Halcrow has included some GeoPerspectives aerial photography and Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) from Bluesky, to enable users to evaluate the improved modelling functionality.   ISIS 2D is the latest addition to the ISIS by Halcrow suite of products. A fully hydrodynamic computational engine, it is designed to work either as a stand-alone tool or within the ISIS suite of products enabling dynamic integration between... (read more)

Airborne Digital Sensor System Certificated

The Applanix Airborne Digital Sensor System (DSS) has been granted full manufacturer certification by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). With this acknowledgment, the USGS recognizes that the Applanix DSS airborne digital camera system meets with manufacturer claims and is capable of providing consistent image data to support civil government mapping and ortho-photography product development. USGS certification is valid for all Applanix DSS camera systems that match the system type evaluated by the USGS during the 2006 site inspection. The Applanix DSS is a ready-to-use directly georeferenced medium-format airborne camera system that provides digital imaging for aerial surveying and remote... (read more)

UK Storm Surge Impacts Mapped Using UAS

One year on from the biggest UK storm surge for 60 years, new aerial photos have revealed details of breaches to the natural and manmade coastal defences on part of the East Anglian coastline. Researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) are mapping selected areas hit by the surge on 5 December 2013 as part of a short-term project, funded by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), to better understand the initial environmental and societal impacts caused by the 2013 storm surge and the resulting saltwater flooding. The Cefas aerial... (read more)
