From 14-16 April, Ocean Careers will be running alongside Ocean Business, the hands-on ocean technology exhibition and training forum taking place at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK. Kickstart for Careers of Six Trainees

Six trainees from coastal communities in the South West started their new careers this week as Offshore Marine Academy kicked off its first training programme. Over the coming twelve months they will be paid as they gain a comprehensive knowledge in commercial diving, ROV (remotely operated vehicle) training, jointing and engineering, cable installation, marine energy, hydrographic survey, navigation, and welding, as well as the basic health and safety accreditations.  The chosen candidates come from varied backgrounds but they all have an interaction with the coastal and marine environment. In conjunction with Ocean Business 2011, several other events are taking place. One is Ocean Careers, a three-day event offering, according to the official programme, 'career advice within the marine science, ocean technology and offshore industries'. A Long and Faithful Career
In 1899, a new ship was launched at the Crescent Shipyard in Elizabethport, New Jersey, USA. This vessel was a Coast and Geodetic Survey ship designed and constructed for rugged service in the far reaches of Alaska. Although 196 feet long, the ship appeared boxy, almost like a section had been cut out of its middle. Primarily a steam vessel, it was also brigantine rigged. When under sail, the ship carried 4,500 feet of canvas. Its new civilian commander was Frank Wally Perkins and its name was Pathfinder. Annual Career and Recruitment Event

Following consultation with the key industry bodies the organisers of Ocean Business and the organisers of Oceanology International have agreed to work together to develop an annual careers event based on the Careers Day that has historically taken place every two years at Oceanology International and most recently the Marine Career Opportunities event held at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.     The event will be called ‘Ocean Careers' and will offer career opportunities and advice within the ocean technology, marine science and offshore industries every year, alternating between the Ocean Business and Oceanology International events.   The annualising of...
