Ocean Business 2011 Preview

The third edition of Ocean Business will take place in Southampton, UK, from 5 – 7 April. The organisation anticipates more than 4000 visitors at the event, with 309 exhibitors from 19 countries. Ocean Business 2011 will be bigger than the previous editions, but will retain the cosy element, with exhibitors all taking relatively small stands. This time the organisation will have more vessels coming in, and there will be a full training and demonstration programme again. The organisation also found new locations for the offsite social events and the gala dinner venue is twice as big as last time.... (read more)

Last month we brought you the story of the famous Cunard cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2), which grounded on 7 August 1992 off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard and the state of Rhode Island. Captain Lusk stated that the US judicial system arrived at the wrong decision regarding who was at fault for the QE2 grounding and suggested that the US agency for this survey, the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, predecessor to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), should have investigated and determined the shoal depth. A Statistical Analysis for System Performance and IHO Compliance
In the last few decades, substantial efforts have been made to improve and facilitate the way hydrographic data is obtained. One technology is the EdgeTech 4600, an interferometric phase difference sonar. Unlike traditional interferometers, the EdgeTech 4600 is the first of its kind to offer complete swath coverage of the seafloor, even at nadir. Combining this kind of coverage with a vertical accuracy that exceeds IHO Special Order requirements in depths less than 30 metres, results in a sonar with superior area coverage rates, especially in shallow water. Acquiring and Integrating Bathymetric Lidar

Developing a Seamless Coastal DEM from Topographic and Bathymetric LiDAR Data
We investigated the most significant issues affecting the creation of a littoral zone digital elevation model from overlapping bathymetric and topographic Lidar (light detection and ranging) data. The main challenge was found to be the use of different methodologies used to establish vertical datums, as well as the narrow overlap between the two data sets, lack of ground control points and data gaps. We identified the main causes of gaps in bathymetric Lidar data and outline a new procedure for quantifying their occurrence. The ongoing WiMUST (Widely scalable Mobile Underwater Sonar Technology) project aims to design and test a system of cooperating autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that would simplify seismic surveying and offer significant advantages over modern streamer-towing operations. Seismic surveys are a crucial part of offshore exploration, producing detailed imagery of sub-bottom rock formations that enables the location and evaluation of oil and gas deposits. The ROV in Nearshore Site Investigation

Nearshore engineering surveys are undertaken for the purpose of gathering information pertaining to the bathymetry and morphology of the seabed, along with the geotechnical characteristics and geophysical profiles of the sub-stratum. Standard practice tends to involve a low-resolution bathymetric and sub-bottom survey of the approximate area of interest, followed by a higher-resolution, site-specific investigation entailing detailed analysis of the location and form of the materials present. In the night of 14 April 1912, the unthinkable happened. The mightiest ship afloat, the brand new White Star Line ship Titanic, was on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York. The ship was advertised as unsinkable. And, if unsinkable, why should there be adequate life boats for all the passengers and crew? The ship departed from Southampton on 10 April.
