Next Geosolutions Sells Out the Season in the Med

Next Geosolutions, the international geoscience and offshore engineering support service contractor, has recently been awarded three marine survey contracts from three different clients to be carried out in direct continuation in the Mediterranean Sea. The projects will involve a full range of marine survey disciplines including onshore, nearshore and offshore activities, most of which will be undertaken by using ROV-mounted sensors and tools. The first one, which has just been successfully completed, encompassed multi-discipline survey tasks aimed at supporting a deep-water survey pipeline project, involving geophysical, environmental, archaeological and UXO survey and relocation activities. Eastern Mediterranean Sea The other two missions... (read more)

Is the Arctic Ice Really Growing?

Completely contrary to the messages that we see every day, the ice on the North Pole would be thicker than the computer models predict. That is if we have to believe some stories. For example, this message on www.electroverse.net in which it was reported that the Kronprins Haakon, a Norwegian ice breaker, got stuck in more than three meters of ice and had to break off an expedition. his news appeared on social media and was shared worldwide. ABPmer to Deliver Sustainable Management of Marine Natural Resources Project

In 2019, the Welsh Government will publish its first-ever Welsh National Marine Plan. Sustainable management of marine and coastal natural resources is central to the plan. To help take the plan forward, the Welsh Government have commissioned ABPmer, a marine environmental consultancy, to investigate and develop a greater understanding of how areas of natural resources interact with Wales’ rich natural heritage, including those areas designated for specific species or habitats. By developing an understanding of the key spatial opportunities and constraints, those wishing to use Welsh seas will understand how they can do so sustainably. Data Sets of the Welsh Maine... (read more)

Live from the Arctic: the Northwest Passage Project

What Are the Impacts of Climate Change on the Arctic Ocean
Today a group of American and Canadian scientists will embark on a two-week research mission through the Northwest Passage. Led by the University of Rhode Island’s Inner Space Centre, researchers will collect water, ice and air samples to help better understand the effect of climate warming on the environment and biodiversity in the Canadian Arctic. Members of the Northwest Passage Project depart from Greenland aboard the Swedish icebreaker Oden, equipped with the technology to share real-time observations and live broadcasts, for a 1800 NM voyage. Environmental and Climatic Changes It is important for people everywhere on Earth to see and... (read more)

Fugro Succeeds with Seep Survey License Sales Offshore Newfoundland

Fugro and partner Amplified Geochemical Imaging (AGI), are reporting recent success selling multiple licences for data from frontier regions offshore of the east coast of Canada. The data was acquired during two separate hydrocarbon seep surveys in the Orphan Basin (2017) and Carson Basin (2018), both situated on the continental margin of Newfoundland. The comprehensive data packages are being licensed by Fugro and include multi-beam echosounder data (bathymetry, backscatter intensity and water column), sub-bottom profiler data, heat flow measurements and shipboard geochemical screening analyses; advanced geochemical analyses, including biomarkers on select samples, are also included. Heat Flow and Geochemical Sampling... (read more)

Report Warns of Irreversible Harm from Deep-sea Mining

The world’s oceans could face severe and irreversible harm unless tighter environmental safeguards are put in place to protect them from the risks of deep-sea mining, warns a new report titled 'In Deep Water', released by Greenpeace International. Shining a light on this emerging threat, the report reveals that the deep-sea mining industry is aware that their activities could result in the extinction of unique species and calls on governments to agree on a strong Global Ocean Treaty at the United Nations that puts conservation, not exploitation, at the heart of ocean governance. Largest Ecosystem on the Planet “The health of our oceans is... (read more)

Study Clarifies Influence Currents in the Atlantic Ocean on Sea Level Rise

A study by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) clarifies what influence major currents in the North Atlantic have on sea level along the northeastern United States. The study, published June 13 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a biweekly peer-reviewed scientific journal of geoscience published by the American Geophysical Union, examined both the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), the zonally-integrated component of surface and deep currents in the Atlantic Ocean, and historical records of sea level in coastal New England. The AMOC is characterized by a northward flow of warm, salty water in the upper layers of the Atlantic, and a... (read more)

Acoustics Specialist RTSYS Unveils Latest Versatile Micro-AUV

After years of development, French Acoustics specialist RTSYS has unveiled its latest versatile micro-AUV named NemoSens. Less than 1 metre long, and easy to carry and launch (less than 20 pounds including payload), NemoSens can host any kind of payload, be it a CTD probe, side-scan sonar or any other sensors. Thanks to an open LINUX architecture, it can be programmed from a ROS or MOOS interface to complete various kind of missions. Acoustic Beacons Its battery provides wide autonomy (up to 8 hours at 4 knots) with a speed range from 2 to 8 knots, and its robustness allows it... (read more)

Joined Forces to Reduce Fuel Consumption

Kongsberg Maritime has formed a partnership with DOF, SINTEF Ocean and NORCE, which aims to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for complex offshore operations while streamlining fleet-wide maintenance. Enabled through sponsorship and support from Innovation Norway, the new partnership between four of Norway’s most maritime organizations will develop a new Decision Support System (DSS) for offshore vessel operations. This tool will act as the foundation for DOF to simplify operational complexity with objective measurement, ultimately enabling optimal utilization and more sustainable fleet management. Catalyze a Tangible Transformation Highlighting the potential of the partnership to catalyze a tangible transformation,... (read more)

Netherlands and USA Cooperate in Environmental Security Certification Programme

Partrac GeoMarine, a Houston, USA, based Marine Survey and Consultancy company, has announced the award by the US Department of Defense (DoD) of a 3-year contract to demonstrate a new tool for mapping the in situ distribution of Contaminants of Concern (COCs) in aquatic sediments. The award is part of the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), the DoD's environmental technology demonstration and validation programme. Partrac, together with its Netherlands based partner Medusa Explorations, will deploy the new instrument at up to three contaminated DoD Superfund sites to map the distribution of COCs such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polychlorinated Biphenyls...
