‘Geospatial Big Data’ Webinar

GCS, based in the USA, has opened additional online seating for its first Geospatial Big Data webinar. The webinar will focus on “Building, Deploying and Managing Applications in the Cloud” and will feature the Montana Site Selector cloud-enabled GIS application. The free one-hour webinar will be broadcast live at 3 pm (U.S. Eastern Daylight Time) on Wednesday 12 June 2013, and will include a Q&A session with the audience. GCS Founder and CEO Alex Philp, PhD., has experienced that geospatial organisations face unique technical challenges in deploying GIS applications in the cloud. The webinar will demonstrate how to cloud enable... (read more)

Marine Geospatial Data Industry Seminar

The Marine Geospatial Data Industry seminar held at the UKHO at beginning of July attracted representatives from government departments and agencies, academia and from the commercial sector. The purpose of the seminar was to stimulate discussion on the potential development of a Marine Geospatial Data Infrastructure (MGDI) for the UK, the role stakeholders will play and how the initiative might be moved forward. Visits to key operational areas within the UKHO and product and service demonstrations offered a chance to see the UKHO in action and provided insight into the future of the UKHO, including its wider markets programme. Dr... (read more)

Geospatial Data Updating at Sea

The Network Centric Mapping Database (NCMD) Web Service Design
A growing problem exists with forward-deployed electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) in obtaining and updating geospatial data(electronic nautical charts). This problem is commonly referred to as distributing geospatial data over the “last tactical mile”. As a solution to this problem, the US Navy has developed software called “Network Centric Mapping Database (NCMD)”. NCMD is a software capability that automates data distribution, with a focus on geospatial data (vector map data, raster map data or imagery). NCMD has been developed as a web service and multi-tiered software application that allows deployed C4ISR system to autonomously obtain and update geospatial... (read more)

In Pursuit of Marine Geospatial Data Infrastructure

Hydrographic data are usually characterised by their geospatial nature, with tremendous and huge amounts of information that are usually abundant but are not adequately maintained, managed and represented for effective decision making. Such decisions are required at all hierarchies of governance — local, state, national, regional and at the international levels — particularly those relating to issues that are of interest to the maritime domain. It is therefore important to pursue the means of addressing these problems. The Marine Geospatial Data Infrastructure (MGDI), Marine Cadastre, Marine Administration or the Coastal Data Infrastructure is the new paradigm that caters for the... (read more)

Hydrography Geospatial Data Management for Malaysia

As the national hydrographic and charting authority in Malaysia, the Hydrographic Directorate of the Royal Malaysian Navy (HDRMN) has a mandate to collect measurements using modern techniques. It also provides adequate and timely hydrographic information to support safety of navigation, national development, defence and security, and numerous other activities related to the use of Malaysia’s marine environment. CARIS and local alliance partner OKENOS Sdn. Bhd. were selected to implement a Hydrographic Geospatial Data Management and Production System (HGDMPS) at the National Hydrographic Centre (NHC). The enterprise GIS, comprised of Bathy DataBASE and HPD, will allow NHC to increase organisational capability... (read more)

Making European Marine Geospatial Data Available

Hydro International Interviews Jan-Bart Calewaert
For some years now EMODnet has been creating access to marine data sources. The long-term aim of EMODnet is to unlock the wealth of marine observations and data in Europe that are partly hidden and fragmented and make these easily available free of charge. On 20 October 2015, a conference will be organised in Oostende, Belgium, to discuss subjects such as data availability and governance of the EMODnet structure. Hydro International interviews Jan-Bart Calewaert, head of the EMODnet Secretariat. How big is the EMODnet Secretariat? The EMODnet Secretariat was set up in 2013. Currently, there are three people working at... (read more)

Hydrography is about Geospatial Data Availability

The Hydro16 event is taking place in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany, from 8-10 November 2016. About 400 professionals have joined the conference and the trade show to update their knowledge and skills and to meet fellow professionals. Geospatial data is becoming an increasingly important issue on the agenda and there is a strong call for making the collected data available. The first keynote speaker was Peter Ehlers, reminding the audience that the venue’s location had been one of the alternatives to establish the BSH offices. In the end, it was decided that the office would be better placed in a more business-oriented... (read more)

UKHO Presents Guyana with Marine Geospatial Data

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has officially handed over marine geospatial data to the Guyanese Government after a campaign of hydrographic surveying. Delegates from UKHO presented the data to government officials at a special event to celebrate the completion of the survey. Two workshops were held to brief ministers and provide technical support for applications of the data, which will help Guyana support the development of its marine economy. The data, which was collected over a period of four months between 2016 and 2017, will initially be used to update nautical charts of the Demerara River. This will enable ships... (read more)

Global Geospatial Information Management and Marine Spatial Data Infrastructures

In 2009, the MSDIWG completed a guidance document – IHO Publication C-17 – Spatial Data Infrastructures: ‘The Marine Dimension’ - Guidance for Hydrographic Offices. C-17 provides general information to assist HOs and other authorities in the identification and implementation of their roles in national SDI. The next stage of activity for the MSDIWG is to propose ways for HOs to implement MSDI - using examples where this is already happening successfully. The MSDIWG is studying the technical, organisational, policy, educational and scientific aspects of MSDI and has identified a number of challenges and opportunities that exist for HOs, together with...
