Multibeam Water Column Imaging

Kongsberg Maritime’s new multi-beam echo sounder, EM 3002, extends the functionality of multi-beam echo sounders to cover 3D imaging of biomass and other acoustic reflectors that might be present in the water column. 160 acoustic beams are sampled digitally with a spatial resolution of 15cm for each ping, creating a digital image of a slice of the water mass under the transducer. When the ship is sailing forward, a 3D description can be obtained by combining the images from several pings. The raw display image is available as part of the operator interface. An option to the SIS operating software... (read more)

Switchable FLS Imaging Option

R2Sonic incorporates a switchable forward-looking sonar (FLS) imaging option to Sonic 2024 Broadband Multibeam Echosounder Systems. When enabled, the option allows the user to easily switch from operating the Sonic 2024 in a bathymetric profiling mode, projecting a narrow 1° along-track beam, to an imaging mode projecting a wide 22° vertical beam.   In imaging mode the operator will see a plan view ahead of the sonar in real time, at much greater ranges than underwater cameras. The Switchable option can be useful for a number of different operations. As application needs change, the Sonic 2024 asset can serve multiple... (read more)

Imaging FlowCytobot Sampler

McLane Research Laboratories, USA, is presenting during Ocean Business 2013 a new in situ sampler. The Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) is an automated submersible imaging flow cytometer that generates images of particles in-flow taken from the aquatic environment. Depending on the target population, the IFCB can generate around 10,000 high-resolution images per hour. The IFCB uses a combination of flow cytometric and video technology to capture high resolution (1μm) images of suspended particles in the size range <10 to 100μm (such as diatoms and dinoflagellates). The instrument continuously samples at a rate of 15ml of sea water per hour. Laser induced... (read more)

Tritech StarFish Imaging Systems

Following the StarFish 450F, Tritech International has launched new products to create a range of StarFish Seabed Imaging Systems. The intuitive, shallow water, high-specification side-scan sonar range now includes the higher-resolution StarFish 452F and StarFish 990F; providing ultra sharp images from the full-body, compact, three-fin, hydrodynamic design. The imaging capabilities of the StarFish range are enhanced through the application of Compressed High Intensity Radar Pulse (CHIRP) and digital-signal-processing (DSP) techniques. StarFish 452F builds on the original StarFish 450F, offering improved resolution with the same long acoustic range of 100m/ 300ft per channel.StarFish 990F is the side scan sonar of choice... Post-Katrina Acoustic Imaging

Boh Bros. Construction Co., L. L .C. of New Orleans is detecting hazards left behind beneath the murky waters of the Port of New Orleans inner harbour navigation canal by Hurricane Katrina. Underwater imaging technology and expertise offered by engineering and surveying firm C. H. Fenstermaker & Associates Inc. is being used. Specially configured scanning sonar and software is being used by Fenstermaker’s Acoustic Imaging Group to gather imagery of the underwater portions of support structures for vehicular and railway bridges that cross the canal at Almonaster Ave., Florida Ave. and Seabrook. The data is then analysed for damage. The... (read more)

GeoChirp 3D Imaging

The GeoChirp 3D from GeoAcoustics Ltd provides the shallow-survey market with a new tool to image sub-surface structures and buried objects. The GeoChirp 3D provides a three-dimensional image of the sub-seabed with typical penetration of 10 – 30m and decimetric horizontal and vertical resolution, with the results presented as a high resolution 3D seismic volume. GeoChirp 3D has been designed to be deployed from small vessels of opportunity (anything with a Hi-AB crane or ‘A’ frame will do), the GeoChirp 3D can be applied to targets of marine geological, engineering, archaeological and defence interest. The capabilities of the system have... (read more)

High-definition Imaging Sonar

US-based Sound Metrics has launched its newest product, the ARIS Explorer line of high-definition imaging sonar. The device offers detailed and video-like resolution. There are three ARIS Explorer models: the 3000 (3MHz) for highly detailed close-up inspection, the 1800 (1.8MHz) for general purpose detection and inspection, and the 1.2MHz which allows long-range location, detection and inspection. An additional diver-held model along with several market specific software modules and enhancements are to follow. For over ten years, Sound Metrics been offering the DIDSON imaging sonar which is in use in many underwater projects, ranging from protecting endangered fish species to oil... (read more)

Water Column Imaging Integration

CARIS' HIPS and SIPS is to integrate water column imaging. Version of HIPS and SIPS 7.1.1, scheduled for release in January 2012, allows differences in the water column data to be made visible for increased productivity.   With water column data, users will be able to extract more qualitative sonar information to reduce the number of run lines and save time and money in survey operations. HIPS and SIPS 7.1.1 allows analysis of water column data directly in 3D and 2D, and without the need for any additional software.   Water column information can be controlled through functions that have... Imaging Improvement for Flowcam

Fluid Imaging Technologies has announced an improvement on the imaging capabilities for its FlowCAM instrument which is used for rapid imaging of aquatic microorganisms. The instrument is getting better and more detailed images in organisms as seen before. This makes the FlowCAM easier to use because they spend less time focusing the instrument and can identify organisms faster. Fluid Imaging Technologies manufactures the FlowCAM, an imaging particle analyser used by marine scientists worldwide for the imaging, identification and classification of microorganisms. Fluid Imaging Technologies will be represented by Planet Ocean Ltd at this years Oi10 exhibition in London's ExCeL March... (read more)

Seismic Imaging Software Upgrade

Spectrum Geo has expanded its in-house seismic imaging solutions with an agreement to purchase licences of the Paradigm Echos processing package. Pre-stack multiple attenuation tools inherent in the Echos solution licenced by Spectrum include 3D surface related multiple attenuation (SRMA) and apex shifted Radon. The software licence purchase also includes anisotropic reverse time migration (RTM) to further expand Spectrum's imaging solution available through Paradigm GeoDepth.   Spectrum is already committed to Paradigm's GeoDepth model building and imaging platform. The purchase of the Echos package will standardise the Spectrum DP solution for onboard processing, pre-processing land/marine 2D/3D and data conditioning for... (read more)
