Facts About Building with Nature

The most recent information update in the IADC series of concise, easy-to-read "management summaries", giving overviews of essential information on specific dredging and maritime construction subjects is Facts About Building with Nature. The publication introduces a new approach to planning, designing and operating dredging and maritime infrastructure projects. Building with Nature seeks positive, pro-active opportunities using the dynamics of the natural system as the starting point.     The concept Building with Nature began in 1979 with the Dutch engineer Honzo Svašek and over the last thirty years has been expanded and promoted by Dr. Ronald E. Waterman who linked... (read more)

How-to Guide Geospatial Infrastructures

World Bank personnel are hosting a workshop at GSDI12 in Singapore in October that will explore the need for a pragmatic How-to Guide. The proposed guide would explicitly address the needs of developing countries in implementing and maintaining spatial data infrastructure at the sub-national and national levels. As input to the workshop, they would like to have your responses to a short survey. The short ten-question survey should take less than ten minutes to complete for the typical respondent. Responses will remain anonymous unless you desire make your identity and contact information available to World Bank staff. (read more)

Transient Analysis Course in Brazil

Haestad Methods hosted a transient analysis training courses to date. The training program, which was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 3-4 June, was designed to educate water professionals on the causes of these damaging phenomena and how to design protective measures using Haestad Methods' HAMMER transient analysis software. Participants were taught participants how to: (1) identify critical points in a system requiring surge protection; (2) avoid costly pipe breaks and service interruptions; (3) reduce wear and tear on infrastructure; (4) map the risk of contamination due to short-lived subatmospheric or low pressures; (5) correlate break records to transient results;... Monitoring Seabed at Hong Kong Airport

A significant area of the new Chep Lap Kok airport in Hong Kong is on reclaimed land. Annual surveys have to be made to provide assurance of seabed stability on the airport perimeter. Emu, in association with Geomatic Surveyors Ltd, is contracted by the airport authority to provide these annual surveys under necessarily stringent quality control procedures. These are met by Emu’s ISO 9002 accreditation. The surveys involve running heave-compensated single beam echo sounder bathymetric surveys with line spacing of between five and 25 metres, as well as sidescan sonar surveys to confirm the integrity of retaining walls and associated... Integrated Subsea Cable Monitoring System Tested at EMEC

An innovate UK-funded project focused on developing a smart integrated monitoring system for offshore energy subsea cables has drawn to a close following successful tests at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney. The novel technology will ultimately lead to better maintenance and repair of underwater cables, reducing costs in the offshore energy sector. The 12-month Innovate UK-funded 'Cable Lifetime Enhancement via Monitoring using Advanced Thermal and electrical Infrastructure Sensing' (CLEMATIS) project demonstrated the technical and commercial viability of a new multifunctional distributed sensor system for the monitoring of subsea cable infrastructure in the offshore renewable energy sector. The... (read more)
