South West Pacific Survey with Airborne Laser Bathymetry

Fugro has commissioned an additional airborne laser bathymetry system to underpin its development and application of bathymetric Lidar technology. The combined Fugro LADS Mk3 and Riegl VQ-820-G systems provide seamless measurements and mapping of nearshore and shallow-water environments. The increased capability will enable Fugro to deliver simultaneous topographic and bathymetric surveys in multiple geographical areas. With high power and frequency, the combined systems achieve coverage that minimises gaps and outperforms lower energy alternatives and single sensor systems in all conditions, particularly in difficult environments. Real Time Point Cloud for Multibeam and Topo Laser Surveys

US-based HYPACK has released its Real Time Point Cloud. This release is an upgrade to the HYPACK2014 release. The application runs in conjunction with HYSWEEP SURVEY and displays both multibeam and topographic laser data in a corrected and geo-referenced colour-coded point cloud. Real Time Point Cloud is developed to be useful for easier feature detection and categorisation, system calibration and verification, and data quality control. Wärtsilä Unveils Targetless Laser Sensor for Offshore Wind Farms

Wärtsilä has launched SceneScan, a targetless laser sensor for offshore wind farms. SceneScan Monopole is among the first laser sensors developed for offshore wind farm applications where the need for installing fixed reflective targets is eliminated. This technology is designed to increase safety onboard service operation vessels (SOVs), since vessel positioning sensors that rely on targets fixed to the structure, are often unreliable because of poor placement, poor quality, and obscurement by workers on the platform. How Scientists Use Satellite-mounted Laser to Map Global Ocean Migration

A study published in the 12 December issue of Nature reports on the use of satellite-borne lidar to map the daily vertical migration of zooplankton across the world’s seas over the course of a decade. On Williams Yorktown Daily, a US-based news site, lead author Michael Behrenfeld of Oregon State University says, “What the LiDAR allowed us to do is sample these migrating animals on a global scale every 16 days for ten years. Bathymetric Survey of Bulgarian Coastline

Blom has been awarded a bathymetric laser scanning (Lidar) contract by the Center for Underwater Archeology for a survey of the coastline of the Black Sea in Bulgaria. The Center for Underwater Archeology is the public organization in Bulgaria responsible for the protection and preservation of the Bulgarian underwater cultural heritage.
