CDL to Develop Holographic Laser System (5-3-2004)

CDL are leading a 3 year Link/OSDA funded program to develop a subsea holographic laser based on the advanced research conducted by an academic team headed by Dr John Watson of Aberdeen University. Laser expertise will be provided by Elforlight UK Ltd. Digital Holography uses an electronic camera usually a CCD, to record data and images within a sample volume instead of using photographic plates or film. The sample is then reconstructed onto computer through specially developed software and provides the operator with a real-time 3-D computer model up to 3000 cm3. e-holocam will measure particles with an accuracy of... C-Gauge Subsea and Surface Laser Measurement System

UK-based OceanTools Ltd has revealed its latest product at Offshore Europe 2013. C-Gauge is a high-precision subsea and surface laser measurement system facilitating accurate measurement of the space between two user-selectable points. The laser and supporting camera are integrated into a customisable compact and robust frame for mounting onto a range of ROVs allowing for open-water or confined-ingress measurement work. The laser projects the measurement line onto the target, with the operator selecting the two measurement points from within the point cloud with the distance between the two displayed instantly: Measurement accuracy to 0.5mm Resolution to 0.3mm Operating distance to... Fanbeam Controller 4.0 Improves Combination of DP and Laser Technology

Designed to enhance product usability, functionality and performance, the Fanbeam controller 4.0 includes a new software interface with a collection of reliable, intelligent automated features and advanced user modes for optimum performance in extreme conditions. The Fanbeam 5 PRS uses accurate time-of-flight laser technology to determine vessel position relative to custom reflectors that can be fixed to offshore rigs, installations or other vessels. Fanbeam data is fed into the vessel's DP system, which controls thrusters that are used to maintain vessel position during operations. To support DP vessel operators, Fanbeam Controller 4.0 now provides advanced software features and functionality that... (read more)

South West Pacific Survey with Airborne Laser Bathymetry

Fugro has commissioned an additional airborne laser bathymetry system to underpin its development and application of bathymetric Lidar technology. The combined Fugro LADS Mk3 and Riegl VQ-820-G systems provide seamless measurements and mapping of nearshore and shallow-water environments. The increased capability will enable Fugro to deliver simultaneous topographic and bathymetric surveys in multiple geographical areas. With high power and frequency, the combined systems achieve coverage that minimises gaps and outperforms lower energy alternatives and single sensor systems in all conditions, particularly in difficult environments. They are highly adaptable and small enough to be installed in a variety of light aircraft.... (read more)

How Scientists Use Satellite-mounted Laser to Map Global Ocean Migration

A study published in the 12 December issue of Nature reports on the use of satellite-borne Lidar to map the daily vertical migration of zooplankton across the world’s seas over the course of a decade. On Williams Yorktown Daily, a US-based news site, lead author Michael Behrenfeld of Oregon State University says, “What the Lidar allowed us to do is sample these migrating animals on a global scale every 16 days for ten years. We’ve never had anywhere near that kind of global coverage to allow us to look at their behaviour, distribution, and abundance.” On the study were researchers from... (read more)

Exciting Applications for Lidar

Hydro International Interviews Dr. Johannes Riegl
The RIEGL laser scanner company has been innovating laser scanning technology for more than 30 years. The equipment can be found in the most remote and even challenging locations across the world and even in space. Dr. Riegl gives a behind the scenes view of RIEGL and explains how the differenent laser scanning technologies have evolved over the years. UAV will be seen in bathymetric applications more frequently in the future with laser scanning as well as cameras. The emerging markets also play a key role for RIEGL laser company and Dr. Riegl expects this to continue into the future.... (read more)
