3D Mobile Seabed Mapping Using Underwater Laser Technology

Sonardyne has used 2G Robotics’ underwater laser scanning technology to dynamically scan and map the seabed in Monterey Bay, California, USA. The high-resolution deepwater mapping of Sur Ridge was performed using 2G Robotics’ ULS-500 underwater laser scanner mounted on an ROV. For the deployment, the ROV was equipped and navigated using SPRINT 700 AAINS, 6G Wideband Syrinx DVL (600kHz), ROV Nav 6 LBL transceiver and a precision pressure sensor. EIVA’s hydrographic survey and navigation software was integrated with the ULS-500 using EIVA’s dedicated driver for 2G Robotics’ systems to facilitate with data capturing and post-processing.  Sonardyne noted that laser mobile mapping... Mapping the Future by Mapping the Past

How Maritime Archaeological Research is Training Tomorrow’s Marine Scientists
This article describes the internship programme that has been offered during six years while performing maritime archaeological projects in the Mediterranean. This collaborative effort between academia and industry provides affordable manpower, whilst interns have a chance to learn and experiment on significant discoveries as part of a closely-knit group. After their internship, motivated interns benefit from broad experiences and contract opportunities. This introduction to quasi-professional employment contrasts with typical commercial operations in terms of pressure and learning opportunities; an approach that translates into continued success for the organisation and the majority of summer interns being motivated to further their career in... Waterside Mapping

Laser scanning and bathymetric side-scan sonar represent the cutting edge of environmental survey technology. Over the last few years, we have tested the integration of these two methodologies, carrying out a number of high-resolution surveys on the Po River, the Venice canals and various Italian harbours. Bathymetric surveys were conducted using a SEA SWATHplus-H wide-swath sonar. An Optech ILRIS-3D terrestrial laser scanner was used to scan the areas above water level. Information from these scans was used to create 3D black and white images (intensity images) of the surveyed area. In the case of the laser scanner, these images are... (read more)
