Alaska’s Undersea Volcano Mapped

Thales GeoSolutions (Pacific), an ocean engineering, surveying and mapping company, has successfully mapped Alaska’s first known active undersea volcano. The volcano lies in the Northwest portion of Amchitka Pass, Southeast of Semisopochnoi Island in the Aleutians. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Auke Bay Laboratory (Juneau, AK) contracted Thales GeoSolutions (Pacific) to map seafloor habitat for deep-sea coral research. The volcano was originally discovered in 2002 by NMFS biologists, Bob Stone and Dr Jon Heifetz, who used the Delta submarine to video coral habitat on the volcano. A combination of RESON 8111 and 8150 multibeam echosounders were used to produce... (read more)

AUV Off To Gulf of Mexico

A C & C Technologies AUV aboard the R/V Rig Supporter on 2nd August began a 22-day transit from the coast of Angola to the Gulf of Mexico. The AUV recently completed 3,100 kilometres of survey lines on a deep-water site investigation study for ExxonMobil. Upon completing its transit back to the Gulf of Mexico the AUV is expected to begin several pending projects. It collects high-resolution multibeam bathymetry side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiler data in a single pass and has to date performed more than 24,000 kilometres of AUV surveys. (read more)

USACE Delivery S/V Moritz

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently welcomed the delivery of the S/V Moritz to their New York District. The all aluminium, 58’ foil-supported survey catamaran designed and constructed by Kvichak Marine Industries, will conduct hydrographic surveys in connection with operation, maintenance and new construction in and around New York Harbour. This is the second survey catamaran Kvichak has delivered to the USACE in 2003. The USACE Marine Design Center was instrumental in all design and construction phases of the Moritz, as for its predecessor, the S/V Irvington that operates in the Mobile District. Two hundred per cent... (read more)

Thales MV Askelad First Campaign

The Thales MV Askelad has completed her first survey campaign in the Asia Pacific region with the conclusion of an As-Built Pipeline Survey in Indonesia. The Askelad arrived in the Asia Pacific region complete with a hull-mounted swathe bathymetry and 4x4 Pinger array system, single-beam echo sounder and USBL transducer. Thales conducted the 188 km As-Built Pipeline Survey for Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd along the recently laid 28 inch gas pipeline between Kuala Tungkal and Panaran (offshore section KP25 to KP 213). The fifteen-day campaign commenced in May 2003, with Thales using the vessels permanently fitted single-beam bathymetry and... (read more)

C & C AUV Completes Oil Project

C & C Technologies recently completed an AUV site investigation survey off the coast of Angola for ExxonMobil. During the 34-day project, C & C’s AUV aboard the R/V Rig Supporter collected high-resolution multi-beam bathymetry, side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiler data in water depths ranging from 500 to 900 metres. While collecting over 3,100 kilometres of data, the AUV utilised acoustic modems to transfer sub-sampled data to the R/V Rig Supporter for QA/QC measures performed by route engineers. Since becoming operational in January 2001, the C & C AUV has performed more than 24,000 kilometres of surveys on 47 different... (read more)
